Spent many wonderful times with Michael.
As young teenagers we would jump in his Dad's 1958 Oldsmobile
and travel around town to attend dances and social events in the area. It's so hard to believe as I saw him Sun. at the hospital and he was sure he was coming home on Mon.
Such a great picture of Michael in the paper today
Always fun to be around,
To Arlene,Michelle,Melanie,Marianne and Peter and all the family
I wish you hope and strength in this time of deep sorrow
Rest in peace dear friend, you are headed to a better place.

I am deeply saddened by the sudden passing of our dear friend Michael. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Baker Family as well as the staff at Agro Zaffiro.
Mike was not only a working colleague but he was a good friend. He always made time to speak with someone, give advice and knew the law like the back of his hand. Incidentally the moose claim that has been referred to in prior notes, was my claim. For the longest time, I referred to Mike as the moose specialist. He just chuckled.
We’d compare notes about our family roots and holiday traditions. Told me how he’d bribe his sister to make traditional Italian food. He always talked about his family and adored them. He’d look forward to when I had mediation in Hamilton as knew I’d bring some baked goods. He’d call Kathryn to make her feel bad that she was missing out on goodies.
Mike you will always be remembered for your great stories, the lines that only you could get away with, but most of all, your smile, chuckle, kind heartedness and a true gentlemen that you were. You will truly be missed.
It was a great honour to have known and worked with you. May eternal peace be with you always!!

My Deepest Condolences.
I'm so greatful to have known him. I had such a great time working with him and I will miss the mediations with him. Mike was such a character and he will be greatly missed by everyone that knew him. He was a big teddy bear and we adored him.
I don't remember where I heard this, but it is truly fitting: "When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure."
Mike, you are loved immensely and will be missed immeasurably.

Dear Arlene and Family:
My sincere condolences.
I recall many happy times with Mike as a lawyer when I was doing motor vehicle litigation. The case was set for trial before Judge Stayshyn. We had a last ditch settlement meeting. We settled. Mike said let's go to dinner. We all went to LoPresti's. I paid the bill and we added to the costs that I was getting.
However, you may not know it but Mike and I and Maryann met when we were around 10 years of age - I am 68 as well. His Uncle Springy brought Marianne and Mike near North Bay for a fishing weekend. We then hooked up again when we were both in law school. Mike was living with his parents at Gore Variety in Burlington. He drove us to school for at least a year and along the way we managed to go to the race track twice a week.
Once again, my sincere condolences.

I just want to thank you for being such a wonderful boss. It was a pleasure to come to work every day. You made everything not so serious. I will miss you screaming out my name and that incredible infectious laugh of yours. I was truly blessed to have been given the opportunity to work with you. You will be forever in my heart.
Arlene and family,
My sincere heartfelt condolences. Stay strong together and thank you for sharing him with the rest of us.

I had the pleasure of occupying the office next to Mr. Baker for several years and I was a better lawyer for it. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of the law that was incomparable. I would seek his help on a legal issue and he would say something impossible like "look up that case with the sledgehammer and the moose. I would skeptically enter those search terms and instantly get the answer I was looking for.
He was always ready and willing to help and he did it with humour.Whether it was late at night or during the heat of trial, he would deliver the sound advice required followed by some unrepeatable wisecrack. His presence will be greatly missed but his legacy lives on in the many lawyers that met and worked with him.
Godspeed, Mr. Baker.

To the Baker Family: Please accept my deepest regrets. He left us far too young.
My memories of Mike all surround his exemplary career as a lawyer. Through most of that time he was always joined at the hip by Ed Orzel. And what a pair they were! Their combined sarcastic sense of humour was something to behold. Unfortunately I was in their bomb site more than once. I never left their company without trying to get a few shots in...but never with any success. What a pair? What characters? What fun...
One of Mike's earliest mentors & friends was the late John Agro, QC. I recall a conversation I had with him about Mike. He told me that Mike was "one of the finest legal minds in our profession. His ability to think on his feet during cross-examinations is world-class."
There are many other stories that come to mind and all end with seeing that big smile and hearing that unique laugh. I'm going to miss that...
Deepest regrets,
Glenn Gibson / Global Chief Stategy Officer / Crawford & Company / Atlanta, Georgia

Mr. Baker always had words of wisdom for me during any of my important life events:
When I got hired as an associate at Agro Zaffiro, he came down to the student office to let us know that he "voted no."
When I got married, he announced that everyone should give me money to pay for my "big Italian wedding."
When I was about to announce my pregnancy, he commented extensively in the lunch room about the amazing fertility of the AZ staff.
There was never a dull moment with him around! He was an amazing resource for a new lawyer and had an unbelievable recall of the law. It was a great honor to have known him and had the privilege of his mentorship.
You will be greatly missed Mr. Baker!

"Who is this guy? And what did I get myself into?" I remember having that very distinct memory of Mr. Baker when I walked through the doors of Agro, Zaffiro, Parente, Orzel, and Baker (as it then was).
Passing Mr. Baker in the hallway at work was an adventure. You would never know what he was going to say to you and whether he was joking (especially when Mr. Orzel was beside him).
There were times when you would show up in the lunchroom to eat and there he was. Often he and Kathryn were in the middle of some discussion that moved from the law to various "fringe" topics that had the rest of us at the table either blushing or laughing uncontrollably and sometimes both.
There were times when you would get the "appointment" as a junior lawyer to drive him to a mediation (or even to the Casino). There were times when we all found ourselves on the same golf course. Even a time when he took a turn a little sharply and sent an articling student flying off the golf cart. As a young lawyer starting off, Mr. Baker made the experience of law unstable, unpredictable, and fun.
Ultimately, you always knew where you stood with Mr. Baker. And if you stood by him, you were privileged to share in some good stories and the occasional piece of wisdom.
To his family, we hope the good memories and stories that we all have of Mr. Baker, will help you through the times ahead. Thank you for sharing him with his "work" family all these years.

Mike, I think you waited until I was away before you left. You knew that the pain would be eased by being me being so far away in a place where there is beauty and life is happy. That was yet another gift you gave to me. In 24 years there was not a day when we did not laugh our asses off. I have lost one of my best friends in the whole world but my life is so much richer for knowing you. You can no longer object to my questions during my trials which is a good thing I guess but I still think that you will give me the molokie from heaven. Brendan and Anne were so upset but immediately started with our Christmas dinner stories and the love and laughter you brought to our house each year. That will continue with Arlene, i promise. Jim will miss your wisdom, humour and your constant insulting of me. For Brendan to have wanted to donate his kidney to you tells you something of your stature in a boy's heart. You were my mentor, my conscience, my sounding board, my best friend. I know that you will always be near. Your humour, intelligence will carry on in Owen and Julia whom you loved so much. Behave up there in heaven. I know it is a funnier and more lively place for having you.
To Arlene, Melanie, Brian Julia, Owen and Michelle, he loved you all so much. He talked about you to me all of the time. He was loved.

I have very fond memories of my neighbours, the Bakers. As I remember Mr. Baker, I think of trips in the 70's to his cottage singing Meatloaf in the back of his station wagon with that enormous car phone- he was always ahead of his time. I remember playing Frogger on Intellivision when it first came out, playing in the large sandbox with a roof, eating candy from Mr. Baker's mom's store, swimming in his backyard pool, trips to Wonderland, trying wonderful food, and playing pinball on his arcade machine in the basement.
I wish to express my sincerest condolences to Mrs. Baker, Melanie, Michelle, and the rest of your family.

Dear Mrs. Baker and family,
Lesley and I are deeply saddened by the news of Mr. Baker’s passing.
We completely agree that Mr. Baker was a unique character and his personality was larger than life.
I feel privileged that I was able to experience it for nearly 7 years both in and out of the courtroom.
Like many others influenced by Mr. Baker, I am also grateful for his mentorship, sage advice, and friendship.
My respect for him is immense and I am truly proud to have been his apprentice in learning the practice of law.
Although I stood taller than him, I always looked up to him.
He will be truly missed.
Our thoughts are with you at this most difficult time.
Sincerely,
James & Lesley Aire
