Obituary of Joyce Laxton
After a long and wonderful life, it is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Joyce Laxton (nee Abel), on Sunday, March 24th, 2024, at Meadowlands Retirement Community in Ancaster in her 97th year. Born on April 25th, 1927, to Irene and Harry Abel, Ottawa Street, Hamilton. Joyce will be re-united with Doug, her beloved husband of 70 years (plus 10 years of friendship and dating). As well, Joyce will be with her parents, her sister Pat (Bert Gaskell) and her brother Ernie Abel (Judy Abel). Also predeceased by her brothers-in-law, Arnold (Audrey), Harold (the late Mary), John (the late Joyce), and Donald (Dorothy and the late Edith). Joyce will be deeply missed by her sisters-in-law, Lois Hutchinson (the late Elmer), and Audrey Laxton (nee Eaton), who had been her lifelong best friend since meeting at the sweet age of 3 years old. Joyce will be lovingly remembered by her 25 nieces and nephews, and many old and new friends that were cherished by Joyce, as she spoke so fondly of all the special people in her life.
Joyce was a teacher for 35 years at W.H. Ballard and Viscount Montgomery schools, before retiring at the age of 55.
Joyce and Doug enjoyed many years of travelling around the world, on their own, and with family and friends. When not travelling abroad, Glendale Golf and Country Club was their second home as well as boating, fishing, and up north adventures.
Joyce was not only generous with her time by volunteering and supporting her churches: Grace Anglican and later, the Church of the Nativity; she also never showed up anywhere without a little gift of thanks and appreciation. She was an outgoing and positive woman, who did everything with impeccable style and grace no matter what the occasion. Joyce has touched so many people near and far throughout her life, the memories of her will be loved and enjoyed, as she lives on in our hearts and thoughts.
The family would like to thank the staff of Meadowlands Retirement Community, Home and Community Care, Bayshore Palliative Care, and ParaMed for all their kindness and support.
Cremation has already taken place, and interment will happen at a later date. A memorial service for Joyce will be held at the Church of the Nativity, 1831 King Street East, Hamilton on Saturday, April 27th, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. This will be followed by a wonderful celebration party to reflect on Joyce’s loves, lifestyle, and famous fashion flare.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Red Cross, the Church of the Nativity, or a charity of your choice.
Tootles, Hon!
