Dear Sue and Dan, Daniel and Aida, and Donna,
We were so sorry to hear of your father’s death and extend our sincerest condolences. We enjoyed a long friendship with your mom and dad, lasting over 50 years and have many fond memories, especially Sauble Beach. The sound of “BEACH DAY” when the sun would appear after a rainy day, the many campfires, the bridge games, and of course Bob’s keen sense of humour. Now our thoughts are with you as you face this difficult time. We hope you find comfort in your many good memories. Sincere condolences and warm regards to all.
Roy and Jacquie

Fond memories of Bob from our time at Central. He always kept me laughing with his great sense of humour, wit and puns, especially in June. Crosthwaite is a name I knew when I met Bob, my mom grew up on Crosthwaite Avenue North, and Bob told me of the family connection. May his family know how much he was adored by his Central staff family and students.

Sharing a few impressions of Bob which I hope will bring some happy memories to Sue, Dan and Donna and the extended families. From Bob I learned there is a Crosthwaite Avenue, parallel to Kenilworth Ave S. that is connected to family land and history.
As a lad, Bob liked being in the out-of-doors and often rambled in the King’s Forest. Later in life he enjoyed other activities, jogging, walking the dogs, and hearing the sound of grouse take off, and seeing beauty in a pheasant’s tail feather. If memory serves correctly, he played the piano and enjoyed drawing. On his walks, he kept count of the ‘free’ money he collected by picking up returnable bottles and cans. He once laughingly told me of being mistaken by a local grower for a worker who was ‘down on his luck’ and being offered a job tying up grapevines. He cut down trees without accident and unusual for many working in the trades, he had all his fingers (his words). He harvested wood and used it to heat the home in the winter. He was an excellent canoeist, skilled with a paddle and enjoyed fishing, often with great success.
In his teaching life he was well respected by staff and students. His classes took on the tasks including mandated course work, support for theatrical productions and the various real life projects of commissioned ‘sheds’. Most designs were pretty standard…except when I wished for a gazebo with eight sides and an elegant roof. His drawings for the project are full of sketches and complex calculations of rise, run, angles, and pitches. It was designed to be prefabbed in the shop and assembled on site. A lot of math and planning by a clever man have provided enjoyment to many. He was very skilled at his craft of carpentry and cabinetry.
Certainly, one of a kind, Bob is unmatched for his quickness of wit, warmth and generous spirit. He is missed.

I always think of him whenever I hear "I beg your pardon, I never promised u a rose garden......", we had a fellow student, last name Garden, and when that song came out, he always entertained us with it, never got old!

Mr. Crosthwaite - you were a wonderful teacher. I needed one arts credit to complete my diploma. I took grade 12 woodworking. For the entire semester when he took attendance he said. .. Pamela Knocks (my maiden name is Knox) with 3 knocks on the desk and n o b o d y (.. said very slowly) answers!. I've told that story many times. So sorry for your loss.

I as a former student of Bob's back in 1962 at Delta H.S., then as a student teacher at Central H.S and finally as a colleague at T.A.Blakelock in Oakville where Bob came back after retirement to help us out for a semester.
I remember one saying that got to him in a nice way by one of the ESA students "Teacher Teacher", he loved to get out and take a walks at lunch as well leave a few words of wisdom each morning on the board in the tech office.
He inspired me to go into woodworking/construction and finally teaching as he did for many of his students
Will be missed by former students and staff alike

I wish to send our sincere condolences to Bob's family. Not only was Bob a colleague but both my sons, Marty and Jamie got to enjoy wood working as taught to them when they attended BCHS. I have memories of memories of Bob. Like several folks have mentioned, Bob's generosity resulted in his students building several garden shed for my family. I was often amazed by bob's wit and ability to invent a pun. I remember mentioning to Bob that one of our football players named C. Best had suffered a season ending injury. Bob's quip was, "that too bad, he was your best player." Bob loved playing poker, he hosted several nights at his home for some of Central's staff, we all appreciate his generosity sharing his home often late into the night. Bob was a character that was unique and multifaceted, he will be missed. "May you go gently into the good night, Bob."

To Family and Friends of Bob Crosthwaite
Thank you for sharing your father with us the students at Burlington Central High School. He was and will always be my favourite teacher. His quick wit and hardy laugh made his woodshop the place to be. He encouraged me to not only learn to build coffee tables, saw horses and sheds he taught me to share my skills with others often letting me provide assistance in his other classes.
Mr Crosthwaite and he will always be that to me, saw potential in us to be leaders in our lives. Our paths crossed many times on the beach in Sauble or the football field where he volunteered to time games. I hope that your family can get through your grief knowing that he leaves behind a lasting legacy. May his spirit find peace. Good Bless

I have several great memories to share. In the early 70's Bob and his carpenter students prefabbed sheds for people. Jean & I bought one of them. All the customer had to do was to lay down a concrete pad. That shed is still standing in our backyard.
Around the same time Bob and his lads constructed a pre-fab shed for Appleby United Church where Jean & I were members. They brought on site one morning and put it up.
Then Bob was kind enough to allow people to come into his woodshop to do some job or other. What a gentleman.
Finally we all have memories of the many speeches he made as emcees at some retirement or other event. What a talent Bob had for this.
Sincerely
Jim Keenleyside
