I'll regret never taking the time to express to Rick that I respected and admired him.
He was one of the most unapologetically direct and honest people I've met. Yet also kind, witty, and an under-appreciated listener. I never met his family; but I always suspected he was an outstanding husband and father. My condolences to the family.

I only got to work closely with Rick for a short period of time, but during that time he made me feel like a friend. He was always upbeat and easy to talk to. I will miss joking around with him, as well as talking about music, and family life with him.
My deepest condolences to his family and friends, Rest In Peace Rick.

My condolences for all of the family, especially Michele, Mason and Mya, for their immense loss. I wish you all the strength in the world. Words can't describe the sadness of losing such an incredibly nice guy, who was still so young, a loving and proud father and husband, as all loving memories of Rick on these pages show. The only thing I can do is share some old memories with you.
For me, Rick will always be the cousin I loved to hang around with, him being the youngest child of Lourens, the oldest of the Wierenga siblings, and me being the oldest child of Eddy, the youngest brother of Lourens. This explains why we had not seen each other for such a long, long time, being separated by the Atlantic Ocean. Rick living in Canada, while our family never emigrated and stayed in Holland. But it also explains why we had so much fun when we did meet, being related by blood and about the same age.
Ricks great sense of humour is something I will always cherish: it was so much fun to have him around. Like at the Wierenga family reunion in the north of the Netherlands in 1989, when we were at the age of discovering life, drinking (just a few...) beers together and sharing jokes and thoughts about life. Or when we met again in Canada, at a barbecue that was organized especially for us, when I came over with my girlfriend Eveline (now my wife) at the end of the nineties.
And I will never forget when Rick came to the Netherlands for the second time, in the summer of the year 2002 I believe, and stayed at my place in Leiden. The way Rick pronounced the word “kroketten” (a famous Dutch snack, please do not check out what it is made of) was very funny, but even funnier was the amount he could eat of them. Every day he would go out to Kamil, the Egyptian small restaurant on the other side of the street, and order two kroketten. With mustard.
Even more to his taste was the Belgian white beer Hoegaarden we used to drink at the bars, sitting in the sun around the canals of Leiden – and that's a pretty hard 'g' to pronounce, but he always wanted to order himself, being proud of his Dutch heritage (later on he e-mailed me that he got his favorite bar back home in Canada to serve Hoegaarden as well).
What stands out in my memories of Rick, is that he was always positive and genuinely nice. I can't remember one moment where we fell into an argument, not even a tiny one. He would just go with the flow. And after the last time we said goodbye, he went on to be a real man. A job, a wife, children - a family. O how I would have loved to meet him again.
May you rest in peace, Rick.

Rick was a lot of things to a lot of people. All of them were great. But to me it was more than a co-worker or a work friend. He was my best friend. I thought we were going to grow old and grumpier together. I guess now I'l have to do the work for both of us.
My heart goes out to the family. Especially his wonderful kids and Wife Michele. I still don't know how she put up with him all these years.
Lots of love.

Rick was such a warm, caring and funny guy. Of all cousins, Rick was the closest to me in age. I will cherish the cute picture of the two of us as toddlers, taken in our apartment in Delfzijl.
I have strong memories of how very fond Auk was of Rick as a child. I also remember how much Rick enjoyed his stay in Leiden years ago. He absolutely loved the Dutch vibe, the freedom and the pubs!
Although we had not seen each other in years, internet enabled us to stay connected. I loved his sense of humour and I was impressed and inspired by the way he expressed his love, admiration and commitment to his wife and children.
I was in touch with Rick just recently, and I was hoping to meet again in the near future. I am so sad that his life has come to such a sudden end. My heart is heavy for this incredible loss.
I wish Michele, Mason, Mya and everyone touched by his unexpected passing much love, strength and support in these difficult times.

You will always be known as Uncle Rick, you were my sister's bright light in the dark, her shoulder to lean on, her ear to whisper to, her eyes to understand. You were the guardian and protector for Mason and Mya, you were adored by your nephew Aidan and made your niece Elsie question who is the funny guy. Thank you for your love and your memories for all of us to cherish and hold onto. You will be deeply missed but will always never be forgotten. Love Uncle eric

We remember Rick as a wonderful playful child. His Mom's nickname for him was Pooh Bear. That is what he exemplified in his short stay on this earth. Winnie the Pooh bear always said everyday is a good day, that is what Rick conveyed to everyone he encountered. Always a good day. We will miss your dry sense of humour and your great hospitality.
You will be dearly missed by Michelle Mason and Maya. Our love goes out to you.

My memory of Rick is a young teenager, a head full of hair, a soft-spoken guy, shy but always a smile on his face. Most of us in the family were older than Rick. Unfortunately, I never knew the man, the husband and father he became: I regret that now. It makes us all realize every moment is precious and not to take moments for granted. Even though I haven't seen Rick in a long time, I will miss him and hold on to that memory of my young cousin's sweet smile.
My prayers are with our family, with Michele, Mason and Mya: My heart breaks for you and your tremendous loss...I wish there was something I could say to give you strength. I just know Rick must be around you all trying to give you comfort.

Rick was someone who I had the privilege to know and work with for a number of years before my career took me outside of the Cogeco call center.
Regardless of this, Rick was always happy to give a hello and an enthusiastic smile whenever I would run into him in the years that followed.
He was a positive influence on anyone who made his acquaintance and shall be deeply missed by all who knew him. My most profound and heartfelt condolences on your loss.

Hey Rick
I met you at cogeco and you were the guitar player in our band. You know we had been going at this jamming thing for almost 10 years. I'm so glad that I got to spend that time with you. Going through our song list on jam nights was awesome. These are times that I will always cherish and fondly remember forever. The last time we spoke you absolutely made my day. You always knew how to connect with people and saw the importance of that. Life goes on, but it just won't be the same. You will be missed my friend.
