Mr. Gilbert was my first homeroom (9D) teacher at Grimsby Secondary School in the 1966-67 academic year. If I remember correctly, that was his first year of teaching school. As others have mentioned in their tributes, he had a unique sense of humour. He was a kind, approachable man and a good teacher. That first year, we really put him through some tough moments, but it took a lot to get him riled. I met Mr. Gilbert only a couple of times after leaving school, but on those occasions, he remembered my name and showed genuine interest in my life experiences. Rest in peace, good man. Sincere condolences to his wife and family.

Mr. Gilbert was a wonderful teacher at GSS. Loved to use comedy to explain math and keep kids interested. I was so interested I had to repeat his math class the next year. No fault of his. I remember him as a member of Stoney Creek United Church where my family and I were members when I was first married with kids back in 1997. I still remember his university of Queen's tie which was more stylish then his fish tie. Thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends

Ken was a dear colleague of mine at GSS. He was a great mentor and helped me get into the full school life there when I was starting out as a new teacher. I will always remember his talks that made me feel at ease with teaching and guided my directions. I would often drive him home and we shared many a funny moment on those drives. I will miss Ken but I know he is happy in Heaven.

Just a few things about Ken from one who taught at GSS, starting just 1 or 2 years after Ken.
A friend of Ken who got to know him in retirement said about Ken “You could not ask for a nicer guy in Ken. He would give you the shirt off his back”.
About a month after starting there, my wife, pregnant with our first child and I, needed to move, and Ken was there to provide a needed helping hand.
During his 30 plus years at GSS, he did much more than just teach math to his students. His class room was always open to any who needed extra help with their math whether or not they were one of his students. But he was also a trusted confident to any who had other difficulties.
Ken’s activities outside the classroom did not stop here. They included mentoring student counsel members, teacher’s federation service, and other extra curricular activities. He was never just a classroom teacher at GSS.
A very significant event at GSS was in 1979, was a fund raising event to support children in 3rd world countries. Over 200 GSS students participated in a 30 hour starvathon which resulted in 10 children being supported for several years through World Vision. That activity was repeated a second time with even greater success and became a model activity for World Vision. That activity would not have occurred without Ken’ support and involvement. This is just a few things about Ken.
Just one more. During my first year of teaching after 10 years of employment in industry, had it not been for Ken, for better or worse, it would likely have also been my last.

My condolences go out to Mr. Gilberts family, friends and colleagues. Mr. Gilbert was my math teacher at grimsby and he was my favorite. Math, not being one of my greatest subjects, he took the time with me to make sure I 'got it'. He always had a smile on his face and definitely cared about his 'school kids'. Thank you Mr. Gilbert for being an unforgettable teacher and making me believe I could do it. Rest In Peace sir.

I'm very sad that Ken has gone from this world.
He was a family friend, one of my father's oldest and best friends. He visited often when I was growing up and we even went on some adventures over the years. I remember when I was maybe nine years old, Ken, my dad and I went through the African Lion Safari. The two friends were having fun feeding the baboons on the roof of the car and one ended up reaching in to me in the back seat. I shook its hand it it smacked me across my head. I'm not even sure if they rolled up the window after that. :) It was just typical of the kind of trouble we got into when they got together and took me along.
I will always remember Ken's good-natured ribbing and teasing fondly.
All my best to Sue and everyone who was lucky to know him and love him.

To the family of Ken Gilbert, my sincere condolences on his passing. Always remembered from my high school days as a gentle, jovial, teacher, with a unique way of getting his point across, and, teaching lessons far beyond the subject (math) at hand... even for more troublesome students, of which I was certainly one. Through my high school years, through my involvement with student council, he was a constant presence, a pillar of smiling support and encouragement, and could always be counted on if we needed a chaperone for a concert, dance, bus trip, or some sage advice on council matters. He took time for extra help if you needed it, not to mention coaching teams, along with clubs and electives. Truly, one of my more memorable teachers, and, we were blessed to have several at GDSS back in the 70's.
May he rest well, in peace, and great memories guide you as you celebrate his life.

My condolences to Mr Gilbert's family. I remember him fondly as he was my high school math teacher m. He was always happy and I can't remember him not having a smile on his face. He was my teacher in a class where I was the only girl in a class of rowdy boys throwing erasers around the room lol. Those days now seem so long ago. Again, I was saddened to see if his passing. I will always remember him. Lots of love.

I extend my heartfelt sympathy to Ken's family.
We all are going to miss Ken. I was always proud to be part of the Grisby staff and associated with such a fine group of caring people. Ken was certainly tops in the caring department. I particularly admired his consistently positive and enthusiastic outlook. Not sure I ever heard him complain about anything. By example, he demonstrated that consideration and tolerance never had to be put aside to achieve a goal.
