Obituary of Ronald "Ron" Day Smithson
SMITHSON, Ronald Day (Ron)
Passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 17, 2016, in his 89th year. Gone to join Mary, his soul mate and cherished wife of 62 years, and his daughter Judi. Loving father of Michael (Jo Anne), John (June), Joe (Ann), Kathy, Bill (Nancy) and late Judi (Shawn) Corkery. Proud grandfather of: Brendon, Corrin (Christian) McWhirter, Sean (Kym), Lorne, Chad (Erin), Nicholas, Nicole (Kenny) Vansickle, Paul, Jordan, Sharon (Kenny) and James. Great-grandfather of Dylan, Brooke, Ava, Owen, Blake, Lucy and Samantha. Predeceased by his sister Emma (Art) Doherty, Doris (Bill) Buckles and brother Walter (Amy). Sister-In-Law of Ann (Norm) St. Denis. Special family members: Kay, Rhonda, Heather and many friends he touched within the community. A heartfelt thanks to Dr. Staibano, and Dr. Brimble and his staff of the Peritoneal Dialysis unit. For 36 years, Ron was an employee of the Electronics Division of Westinghouse. He was a very active member in his parish, St. Francis Xavier Church, for 64 years. Along with his wife he was a coordinator of the Marriage Preparation course for over 30 years. Ron was also a very active member of his community: Participation House, numerous committees involving seniors with the City of Hamilton (Seniors' Advisory, Ontario Senior Games Actifest 2006, Rapid Transit Citizen Advisory), Technology Advisory Committee to Mohawk College, Canadian Institute of Management, Scouting, President of Winona Seniors. He was honoured with the Hamilton Senior of the Year Award in 2011 and together with Mary, received The Diocesan Medal of Honour in 2000. Visitors will be received at the Donald V. Brown Funeral Home, 36 Lake Avenue Drive, Stoney Creek, on Sunday, December 4th from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., Prayer Vigil at 8:30 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Francis Xavier Parish, 304 Highway 8, Stoney Creek on Monday, December 5th at 10:00 a.m. Interment in Mountview Gardens Cemetery, 735 Highway 8, Winona. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or The Kidney Foundation of Canada would be appreciated by the family.
