Obituary of Hugh Henry Johnson

Hugh Henry Johnson was the second son of Robert Bruce Johnson and Deborah (Debra) Irene Felker. He was born 02 June 1929 in Elfrida Twp., Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada. Hugh attended SS#6 Public School in Stoney Creek, later known as the Stoney Creek Public School then renamed R.L. Hyslop Public School in memory of the principal. Hugh then attended Saltfleet District High School. He quit school after three years and got a job at the basket factory in Stoney Creek. Following that job, he attended a machinist course at an engineering school in Toronto and eventually got a job with Otis Fensom making Bofor Guns. From there he worked at Westinghouse for 35 years and retired in 1982. Hugh entered the service around 1942 where he spent approximately three years during World War II. He was stationed at Grand Prairie, Alberta in the Signals Corps. On 30 July 1949 Hugh Henry Johnson married Muriel Elizabeth Schwendiman at the Schwendiman House, 6 First Street, Stoney Creek, Ontario (the home of the bride). They lived at 8 Wardrope Ave., Stoney Creek, Ontario from 1949 to 1991 when they moved to #806 – 4 Village Green, Stoney Creek, Ontario. Muriel was born on 17 July 1922 in Hamilton, Wentworth County, Ontario. She was one of five children born to Montford Schwendiman and Myrtle Harrison. Her brothers and sisters were: Rubey Fern, William Frederick, Reta Maude and Olive May. Muriel attended SS#6 Public School in Stoney Creek, Ontario later known as the Stoney Creek Public School which has been renamed R.L. Hyslop Public School in memory of the principal. After public school, she attended Saltfleet District High School where she graduated from the commercial course. Hugh Johnson and Muriel Schwendiman had one son: (1) Richard (Rick) Bruce Johnson – Born on 05 July 1952 in Hamilton, Wentworth Co., Ontario and christened on 26 April 1953 in Stoney Creek United Church, married Wendy Marie Ferguson on 20 April 1974 in Stoney Creek United Church, Stoney Creek, Ontario. Wendy was born on 24 March 1955 to Osborne (Ozzie) Howard Ferguson and Marie Stasiuk. She was christened at Delta Tabernacle in Hamilton, Ontario. Rick and Wendy had four children: (i) Caren Elizabeth Johnson – born on 28 July 1977 and she has one daughter: (a) Tailor Lillian Elizabeth Johnson – born on 02 November 2001 Caren Johnson is to marry Dave Funnell on 17 January 2009 (ii)Robert (Bobby) Daniel Johnson – born on 01 December 1979 Bob and Jen have one son: (a)Calvin Robert Johnson – born 31 July 2008 (iii)Debra (Debbie) Marie Johnson – born on 07 March 1981 (iv)Lucas (Luke) Osborne Johnson – born on 27 April 1983 Rick and Wendy Johnson were separated in 2003 and divorced in 2007. Both Hugh (Johnny as he was known by his close friends) and Muriel were avid golfers and members of the Southbrook Golf Club in Binbrook, Ontario. They each won a couple of trophies throughout their years of golfing. Hugh played baseball for the Stoney Creek Baseball Team in the “Big Four League”. Other members of the team were Nathan Nash, Marv Broughton, West Sherritt, Lloyd Corman, Jack McClung, Holly Richard, Fred Felker (coach), Earl Lampman, “Doc” Green (Jean Green’s 1st husband), Art Lee, Jerry Hansen, Peter Jones, Harry Sackrider and Charlie Sackrider. The batboy was Bill Manary. Hugh also played on a baseball team while he was in the army. Hugh and Muriel celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on 30 July 1999. Muriel Johnson (Schwendiman) died on 12 May 2002 and is buried in the Stoney Creek Cemetery, Stoney Creek, Ontario. As in life, Dad passed peacefully and with dignity, in his 89th year, on September 5, 2008. Long-time Westinghouse Employee, avid Southbrook golfer and lifelong Stoney Creek resident.
