Obituary of Raymond Keith Marttila

With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Raymond Keith Marttila on December 13, 2023, at the age of 78 years. Born in the United Kingdom on January 24, 1945, Ray journeyed to Canada at a young age in 1953, taking a piece of his home country with him.

Ray's pursuit of knowledge led him to McMaster University, Hamilton, ON, Canada. Here he earned his Bachelor of Science in Geology in 1969 and later his Master of Science in 1973. His career saw him working within the oil and gas industry with companies such as PetroCanada, Amoco, British Petroleum and WAHA Oil Company, Libya, leading to his retirement in 2013.

Ray's life was marked by journeys both professional and personal. After moving to Houston in 1984, he would later reside in Calgary, Tripoli and Courtenay. He also spent notable time in Cairo, and was a Snowbird in Mexico between 2016 and 2022.  Ray found serenity on Cortes Island where he moved in 2004.

Ray's personal life was filled with love and resilience. He married Barb Sharples in 1970, and the couple divorced a decade later. Ray found love again in the arms of Lynn Irwin, whom he married in 1981. His life was also enriched by his children and grandchildren who brought him immense joy.

Leaving behind a large and loving family, Ray is survived by his dear wife, Lynn, his children Glen (Alison), Dave (Jenna), Karen (Edgar) and Lynn's children Doug (Kim),  Heidi and Russell. His legacy also lives on through his brother Bob, sister-in-law Maureen, and nephew Chris. His memory will be held dear by his grandchildren Rachel (Trevor), Nicholas (Nicole), Kyra, Aniston (Robbie), Aiden, Cara, Miranda, Abree, Logan, and Alex (Megan). He was predeceased by his nephew, Phil.

Ray was a quiet, generous, gentle, intelligent, and hardworking individual who placed great value on family. His legacy, marked by patience, hard work, and meticulousness, extends beyond his successful career and global travels. His spirit of kindness and generosity remains an inspiration to all who knew him.

Ray's passing leaves a void in the hearts of many. His lessons, love, and legacy will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
