Obituary of Matthew Skerl

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Matthew “Matija” Skerl age 90, born May 14, 1933 in Begunje pri Cerknici, Slovenia and passed away November 18, 2023 while at the General Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario. Matija will be deeply missed and is survived by his beloved wife Angela “Angelca” (nee Tomc), son Frank and his wife Marianne; and his 3 grandchildren Eric, Leah, and Mark. Matija was one of 16 children. He will be missed by his siblings Ana Slana, Tereza Kaiser, France, Rozka Kateren, Zofka Stojnsek; and many relatives throughout Canada, United States, Australia and Slovenia. He was preceded in death by his son Bronko, his parents Frank and Amalija (nee Brancelj), siblings Jernej, Joze, France II, Francka, Lojze, Barbara Marincic, Janez, Tone, Sr. Minka MMS, and Antonija. Matija was a machinist by trade and worked at Fred Hall and Sons in Hamilton for 25 years before retiring. He was a proud founding member at his beloved Slovenski Park where he enjoyed camping, playing bocce ball, spending time with friends, dancing and listening to Slovenian music. He was also a great lover of the outdoors and for 29 years spent as much time as possible at his secluded cabin in the woods in Northern Ontario. Visitation will be held at Donald V. Brown Funeral Home, 36 Lake Avenue Drive, Stoney Creek on Thursday, November 23, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Vigil prayers 3:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, November 24, 2023 at 10 a.m. at St. Gregory the Great Church, 125 Centennial Pkwy.
