Fred introduced himself to my amateur video club, the Viewfinders Camcorder Club of Cupertino, CA, back in 2011. He was particularly interested at the time in finding material to publish in the PANORAMA monthly newsletter which he diligently designed, edited and distributed to the members of the SCCA and other amateur clubs around the world. The Viewfinders were glad to contribute the technical articles from our monthly newsletters to his efforts in this regard. We also swapped DVD’s containing videos from our respective club contests which we used as programs for our club meetings.
Fred and I spent many an hour on the phone talking about our videography exploits, the SCCA annual competitions, our club meeting programs, and just about life in general - sometimes for hours at a time. My last phone conversation with Fred was back in 2018 when I notified him that the Viewfinders Club was closing down due to a dwindling membership that didn’t justify the effort and work to have local meetings and video contests. At that time he felt that the SCCA was also on its last legs (and apparently it did cease operations a couple years later as well).
As stated in Fred’s obituary, I affirm that he was a true friend to those of us who knew and worked with him during his retirement years in support of amateur videography there in Canada and here in California. He made our lives that much more full and meaningful along the way. -- Frank Swanson, Cupertino, CA
