Obituary of Janet Gordon Cumming

September 25, 1932 - May 31, 2023

A proud Scot and Canadian. Born in Oban, Scotland the second child of Molly (Mary) and Charles Campbell. Janet met the love of her life, John Cumming, after moving to Crieff with her mother and siblings Margaret and Gordon. Always a fan of education and adventure, Janet was engaged to John over the phone and agreed to follow him to Canada AFTER she completed her Domestic Sciences Teaching degree at Atholl Crescent in Edinburgh. Alone, Janet crossed the Atlantic with her worldly possessions in a steamer trunk and married John in the summer of 1955. Together they built a home and raised a family in Winona until John’s passing in 1978. Janet was very proud of her children Ian (Bambi) and Ruth (Doug) and her six “brilliant” grandchildren Jordan (Isabelle), Fraser (Taylor), Sheldon, Liam, Camryn and Morgan. Family, cooking, music, reading, church, volunteerism, all creatures great and small…..especially dogs, were very important to Janet. She earned the name, “Grandma Tutu” after rescuing a three legged cat named after the Archbishop. Ever mindful of those less fortunate, Janet was recognized by the City of Stoney Creek in 1997 for her Outreach work with the United Church. Janet’s beautiful soprano voice earned her a position in many choirs throughout her life.

In keeping with Janet’s wishes, cremation has taken place.
