Grand Erie District School Board posted a condolence
Monday, April 5, 2021
From the Grand Erie District School Board:
It is with great sadness that we inform you of the death of one of our Grand Erie students, Smith Baker, who died this past weekend. Smith was a student in the Laurier program at Brantford Collegiate and Vocational School (BCI).
Smith will be remembered as a gentle, gracious soul whose kindness extended to everyone. He was a poet at heart, reciting Shakespeare with such ease and beauty, and composing and delivering his own writing with a raw sincerity that drew everyone in.
As a BCI Laurier student, he had a community of close peers and teachers whose lives were touched by the shared laughs, his fun-loving spirit, and supportive, encouraging attitude. He will be missed by the entire BCI community.
We want to express our deepest sympathies to Smith’s family, his friends and everyone connected to this loss. Grand Erie’s Traumatic Events Response Team is supporting Smith’s family as well as students and staff impacted by his death. Supports are also available for anyone affected by this news.
To honour Smith, school flags across the Board will be lowered for the next three days.

My condolences to Smith's family at this time. He was the kindest soul and I enjoyed spending time with him at BCI. We had a lot of fun together, especially on our lunchtime walks to Gino's and at the semi-formal dance last March. He will be so missed.

My deepest condolences to all of Smith's family and close-friends. Ted, I understand that grief is "love that has no where to go" to be expressed to/for the person who is no longer present. I remember Smith from his happy days at Whole Village, where he could run around carefree with friends in the summer- and jump in the lake, smiling and laughing. That is I how I knew him. I am deeply sorry he became ill. I know bereavement is a terrible visceral pain. In time, may the privilege for having had him, a wonderful son, be the overriding powerful memory more so than the sadness.

Smith was such a beautiful soul. The world truly does need more Smith Bakers - his intelligence, kindness and charisma lit up every classroom he was in. He will be terribly missed by our Laurier class.
