My sincerest and heartfelt condolences to Jim's family. My friendship with your dad, grandpa, brother and uncle Jim spanned way back to the North-End days and continued into our current senior years.
Reflecting on the many tributes attesting to Jim's kindness — one memory comes to the forefront to echo those same sentiments. Jim spear-headed a North-End Reunion at Macassa Bay in the spring of 2019 with the fervent intention of maintaining that brotherhood in staging the reunions annually at Macassa Bay. Unfortunately covid 19 put up a roadblock to prevent that from occurring in 2020 that many of us anticipated attending.
Nevertheless Jim's camaraderie continued via phone calls, a good joke and genuine and sincere interest in his fellow ‘old’ North-Enders.
One very fond memory of our teen years comes to mind. Jim’s VW blew a tire on the way home from the Summer Gardens in Port Dover. There we were stranded at the side of Hwy 6 in the early morning hours of the darkest night — nothing in site for the longest while, except for a big fire engine red Cadillac DeVille convertible that pulls up. A voice bellows out from the driver’s side in a Southern drawl “You boys all need a ride?” It was Levon Helm. Needless to write, the Caddy was already occupied with a foursome but he did stick around providing light from the Caddy’s headlights until we got the spare on........the Caddy’s headlight beams beat the hell out the cigarette lighter flame that we were using to light up the night. ;-)
Jim, may you now be welcomed by The Good Lord into eternity. May you now R.I.P and be re-united with your beloved spouse Mary Lou, your Mom, Dad and brother Bernard.

There's probably no cliche more overused than "A picture is worth 1000 words." But cliches are cliches for a reason, and there's nothing I could fit in 1000 words (or 10,000, or 100,000) that would better describe Uncle Jim than a picture. I don't think I've seen a picture of Uncle Jim looking glum. There's always a big smile plastered on his charming face, and kindness and love and joy in his eyes. And the way he looks in a photo is the way you felt when he walked into a room. I will miss the hell out of my uncle, and I know that everyone who knew him feels the same way. My deepest sympathies to those who were closest to him, who were blessed the most.

I am so sorry for your loss. I actually went on to the Donald V. Brown website to check my mother in laws condolence messages as she passed away on January 12th and the first thing I see is Jim's face. A face and man I will never forget. We worked together many years ago and I am going to say it was at Ultramar Home Energy and I apologize if I have the company wrong. Jim was such a wonderful man. Always a smile on his face and he always made me smile and laugh even if I was sad. My heartfelt condolences to all of Jim's family.

My heart hurts for Uncle Jim’s sons Rob and Chris, and for sisters Pat and Lillian and families. I grew up with the Smillies. Many a weekend morning Uncle Jim would pop by for coffee, tinker under car hoods with my Dad. Mary Lou babysat me and my sister Doreen for some time. Later, I became their primary sitter. Our families vacationed together: camping/cottaging up North, road trips to Cape Cod, Port Dalhousie, Sauble/Wasaga Beaches. Fast toward 45 years, when my sister was diagnosed with cancer, Uncle Jim didn’t hesitate to stop by, call, volunteer to drive her to appointments. There is so much history between our families, the stories too many to recount here. From the tributes here, I see Uncle Jim played a significant role in many lives. He will be missed.

This man, Jim Smillie is going to be missed by many, many people, along with his devoted sisters and their husbands! Jim was a huge part of my growing up days with Lillian, along with his wife! He was like another big brother to me! Always caring, loving and always happy! A real huge void in the Smillie family! Condolences to his boys with whom he was very close to!
Now at peace and with his beloved Mary Lou, he rests with his parents and brother Bernard! Spread kindness, because Jim was the epitome of a Kind Hearted Man that everyone loved! RIP.

Hey Jimmie
We first met when I was just a teenager helping Pops do a job at your place. From then on we would make fun of each other every time we met. You and Mary Lou always treated me good with those unforgettable big smiles! You now have time to catch up with Mary Lou, all of your relatives and friends including Pops! You and Pops were giving each other jabs constantly...he loved it! Thanks a lot for being a part of my life. I hope you are pain free, every day is sunny with a gentle breeze and full of knee slapper and belly buster laughs! You have a great smile Jimmie.

I met Jim, Mary lou and Chris when I worked at Denningers. 4 years later I started work at Millen Road Animal Hospital and low and behold Jim walked in the door with his cat exclaiming "There you are! You went from sausages to hot dogs! Ha!" A happy day! One day at Millen Jim was reading my poster for my wildlife center Urban Wildlife Care. He read my name out loud...several times. Contardi...then looked at me and asked " Is your dad Joe????" I said yes..he said..stunned.."Joe from the Teamsters?????" I said yes. He said " oh my God all this time and I had no clue! I used to go to the Teamsters Hall after work with Gillies Guy and have a drink with him and my buddy all the time!" I brought my dad 87 at the time to Mary Lous memorial and the reunion was beautiful. Dad passed shortly after. Jim thanked me for bringing him. I'd like to think they are sitting together having a drink. Hugs to you Chris, both of your parents are watching over you now. You were blessed to have such loving parents and their love continues in you. Hugs and Condolences to the rest of your family and friends. Cara Contardi

Heartfelt condolences to all the family. It is difficult to find words to describe the impact Jim and his family have had on our small neighbourhood enclave over the many years of being neighbours & friends. Jim will be truly missed, not just for his ability to fix anything that broke in the neighbourhood ( he was always our “ go to “ person ) but for his wonderful warm smile & caring personality. He was a gentle soul and we will miss him deeply.
With love to all his family in this time of darkness.
