Noni.
My heart is broken.
I will always remember growing up on Emerald Street, spending time with you and Nonno tending to the biggest garden I have ever seen, the beans were my favourite. Working in the kitchen making fresh pasta on the big slab of wood, held down by a rusting clamp, while sitting on your lap, you would let me crack the eggs into the mountain of flour. Taking endless trips on the city bus around Hamilton often to James Street, we would stop at Morgenstern's and the local markets for meat always followed by a stop into Commisso's bakery where you would buy fresh bread and buns and always take an extra bun, you would slip to me later. You used to give me a dollar bill from your hidden stash and let me walk across the street to the corner store for a freezie or penny candies or we would take a quick walk around the corner and stop at KFC, you loved that chicken. You would make a mouse, out of a hankerchief you magically pulled out of thin air and made it move across the table, or bounce me on your knee pretending I was riding a cavallo and knew only Italian songs like sega sega and batti manine che viene papa, the same songs you sung my girls when they were born.
As I grew up, I would spend the weekends at your place, spending countless hours watching Matlock, Sisters and always ending with the Golden Girls, you would laugh hysterically at Sophia's jokes. I will always remember minestra, pasta fazool, chicken cutlets, pastina, huge chunks of cheese with fresh bread, tomato salad covered in oil and salt, fresh cut apples (always without the skin....) Zia Maddalena's lemon cookies (you always had a stash in the freezer) and fresh espresso all made from kitchenware that was older than I was. And wine....always, always wine.
You taught me how to wash clothes, letting me stir the whites in a big pot of bleach with a huge wooden spoon. You taught me to make fresh tomato sauce, I remember my fingers turning to prunes as I cut them up. You taught me to speak my mind "bah shut up" and to work hard and save my money. You also taught me that even at 92, don't question your memory, you knew where you bought everything you owned, even if it was from Robinson's or Eaton's 30 years ago.
When I spoke to you last I told you I was worried and to promise that you would keep fighting, you said please don't worry nanone and told me you were tired. You asked about Matthew (you always asked about him and if he was ok) and the girls. You fought harder than anyone I have ever known, braved hard times and persevered with determination and a spark so bright, I always thought no one could put it out, to me you were invincible. But it was time, you were tired, and Nonno missed you. I hope you are smiling down on all of us. You did good Noni and I am so grateful and blessed to have spent 38 years with you.
Love you always.
