Richard and I have just watched the memorial service for Roger. So many memories that we could relate to. What a gracious gentleman! husband, father and grandfather but mostly a wonderful man who loved his Lord Jesus Christ. The service was beautiful. Michelle gave us glimpses of family life and Scott did such a great job. We love you all so much and we know you will miss him terribly but what a wonderful hope he in which he placed his confidence. May the God of all comfort, now comfort your hearts. Our prayers have been and continue to be with your dear family. Richard, Esther, Bradley and Heather.

I knew Roger and his family, including his wife's family in my youth. Roger was a decade younger so my contact with him was limited to the church we both attended. Marilyn was the sister of my former boss and very close friend, George Leng. He, George took me to see Roger and Marilyn Smith, on my last visit to the area, and we had a wonderful time. I was so impressed with their hospitality and the stories Roger told of his bus trips. It was simply a beautiful afternoon. I was determined to repeat it and sorry that it will not happen that way again. To Marilyn and the family, I wish you God's peace and much grace and strength in a difficult time. As you know I've been there and feel your pain. Bob Wahl

Roger was my first cousin and he was a vibrant, warm, kind-hearted and fair-minded man who chose his words well. He loved antiques and had quite a collection including a Victorian settee, wind-up Edson phonograph with records, a juke box and recordings of Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis and Roy Orbison. He shared his love of jazz and his sax, a gutsy choice as apparently his paternal grandfather (whom he dearly loved and always spoke highly of) thought of it way back when, as "the devil's instrument." I recall Christmas concerts where Roger beautifully played "Birthday of a King" and Blake, "O Holy Night." I have a photo of the two brothers with their saxes, wearing tuxes and they look like two polished pros. We were privileged to regularly visit with Roger and Marilyn over these past seven years, from when we first got to know Roger better, as happenstance would have us meet when visiting my dad, his Uncle Harry, at St. Joe's and St. Peter's. (There was an age difference--my first memory was of Roger picking me up to get a drink from the kitchen sink. Even though I was only five, I thought him nice looking with his lovely blond wavy hair and grin--he looked like a young and handsome '50's movie star, as well as tall enough to get his own drinks.) I will always remember his cozy cardigans, slippers and warm hugs. Roger had a wonderful "tell-it-like-it-is" approach without varnish. Perhaps this was due to the genetics of his maternal, Yorkshire grandfather whom he called a "gem." He was not a fan of hypocrisy or of anything less than real and honest. I loved Roger for this honesty and sense of humour. He would perform unexpected kindnesses like go out and wash our car while we were visiting! He was a first-class gentleman and a very dear family member who put his Christian faith into action. He supported me during a very difficult time (during his dear Uncle Harry's "long goodbye" over 6 months) and he was there to cheer up his uncle and be a friend to him when it really counted and when things were not always easy. Art and I both really adored Roger and will greatly miss him. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Marilyn (his very dear devoted wife), and his wonderful children, Michelle and Jeff, and his granddaughter Robin, who like her mom is a star intellect. We are grateful for and are comforted by knowing of Michelle's professional and personal caring of her dad, and so sorry to hear that COVID travel rules will interfere with Jeff being at the service. Our sincere condolences go out to Roger's brother, Blake, who gave me many a music lesson, and to other family and friends of Roger. He was quite the guy and there will be no other like him.

Dear Marilyn, Michelle, Jeff and Families,
I was saddened to hear of Roger's passing but am so grateful that He knew Jesus and is with his Lord! I have so many fond memories of Roger including his great sense of humour, his kindness in the way he served others and for a ride in his black Corvette! He always took an interest in me as a young person and over many years, encouraged me in my faith. As I joined the staff at Winona Gospel, Roger always supported me as a young pastor and I am so thankful for how he influenced me. Our family will be praying for God's peace, rest and blessing as you celebrate Roger's life and mourn his passing.

It wasn’t until our bus arrived at our destination — Lancaster, PA — that I realized I had met our bus driver prior to that trip. I introduced myself (we hugged) and he made me feel special all the way home to Burlington. He and Marilyn knew my parents. I have a picture of Roger, Blake and Stan (my dad) all holding their saxophones — my dad was the short one in the middle! My condolences to the family on his passing. Can you imagine Roger & my dad playing a praise duet in front of The King, especially as we, here on earth, are anticipating the celebration of the Birthday of The King! Sincerely, Colleen Smith
