Deepest condolences to the family. He was my grade 9 English teacher and absolutely the most important teacher in my life. He was incredible to all his student's and really gave me some of the best advice with the troubles I had going at the time. Always willing to listen and help anyone who needed it. Just gutted to hear that he's gone but the lessons I learned from him will stay with me forever. An absolute privilege to have known this great man even for the short time we had together. Thank you again sir.

I hadn't seen Eugene in quite a few years, but on the occasions I've met him he was a kind, generous, and caring person. We shared a mutual interest in movie memorabilia collecting and film music. He enriched the lives of people around him & will be missed by all.

I met Eugene when he was my student teacher many, many years ago. His passion for literature was evident and his enthusiasm for teaching grammar was most impressive! I joked with him at the time that it was most unusual to meet someone who actually liked grammar, but rare to find someone who exuded such enthusiasm for the topic. Thus began a fond rapport. Eugene was an excellent English teacher who challenged his students to excel and a kind and supportive colleague. Though I left the English department, we remained friends. In my last correspondence with him he commented on my grammar and the proper use of the semi-colon. It made me smile. I enjoyed his humour and wit. I will always smile when I think of Eugene and the semi-colon.
My deepest sympathy to his family and friends. May the ache in your hearts be comforted by fond memories of a really fine man who made a difference in so many people's lives. Rest in peace my friend. Gail Albanese

Eugene... from your friends at Hollywood Canteen...
We go back many many years... good friendship and collecting... so very sorry... you will be missed by all who knew you, especially your many students... Mike Orlando
I met Eugene about 20 years ago through my work. We shared a love of movies and particulary movie music. We both knew it was very rare to meet someone else so passionate about such a “niche” interest as film soundtracks. Of course, we didn’t always agree on what we thought was good (and Eugene was a guy who would never hesitate to tell you when he didn’t like something!), but that never got in the way of our friendship. Nor did our sometimes competitive collecting habits, when we would by vying for material on a certain favorite actress or movie. We never took these differences seriously and usually had a good laugh about them later. Eugene (or “Eugenious” as I sometimes jokingly called him) was a good guy whom I also found to be an incredibly generous person. He will be missed. - MIKE ANDERSON

Riding the bus together in grade 9 out to BR's crappy satellite school, snowball throwing contests, collecting movie posters and walking for miles all over Toronto looking for the best book sales, ping pong in Waterloo, board games at the kitchen table of your dear parents welcoming home, basketball in your driveway on East 37th, walking for miles engaged in deep (or so we thought) debates over philosophy and religion, your infectious passion for literature and literary criticism, bible study, comic books, road hockey and friendship. Thank-you Eugene, i will never forget you my dear old friend. You even showed up at my wedding! With sadness and happy memories, rest in peace.

Very saddened to read about Eugene’s passing. We were colleagues at CN for a short time & members of the Hamilton Secondary Unit Executive for a long time. Eugene brought a passion to both the classroom desiring to make his students better and to the HSU desiring to make the lives of his colleagues better. Thoroughly enjoyed our conversations about sports and teacher collective agreements when we were negotiating. Condolences to Eugene’s family. We were all blessed to work with him and call him a friend. RIP

Mr. Matijczyk taught me in Grade 11, English, over twenty years ago. He was the first teacher to show me the power of language to inspire, move, entertain, and shape our very nature. More than this, he taught us as individuals, he recognized the person among the pupils and inspired the gift of self confidence as a result.
I am saddened to read of his passing and am comforted by the thought of the many lives he has inspired that live on.

One of my best mates 40 years. We were the first ones to inhabit the new survey in Stoney Creek in 1980. We spent our youth playing street hockey, basketball and football. Watching Elwy Yost Saturday night at the movies in his basement. He loved film, books, and sports. We spent our nights playing board games, mostly scrabble, masterpiece and euchre. He introduced me to the Doors, Loggins and Messina, Neil Young, authors, such as, Asimov. We had Ticat section 26 seats for many years and always threw the ball around at Gage park then walked to Ivor Wynne for the game. We talked, well, argued, politics, sports and religion in many heated discussions. He always had his facts and stood by his convictions, we respected each of our positions and rarely did our philosophies clash. We were sounding boards for each other throughout our lives. When I married, he was there beside me. To his students, I can promise you he was always fair, tough but fair. I know, I was there when he was marking. He was remarkable with his athletic ability considering his disease, he never complained or used it as a crutch during games. We had so many ping pong tournaments that battled to the end. I will forever have the imprint of his house, his Mom and Dad, there in the kitchen, and Eugene and I at the kitchen table, usually eating perogies and rolling dice! All the great memories that make us who we are.

Mr. Matijczyk was one of my favourites. We shared a similar sense of humour and a few interests, such as old movies and vintage comic books. Several years ago he asked my dad, one of his own former teachers, about me and my collection. Very nice of him to think of me after so long. I regret not having the chance to catch up, and to thank him personally for his role in shaping my life.

Eugene,
We met over 30 years ago, and my life would not be what it is today without you. You were my daughter’s godfather, one of my best friends, and my closest confidant. We agreed on practically nothing in our thousands of hours of conversations and I loved every one of them. You were always my rock, and my safe harbor from the storm. I want to say that I don’t know how I will make it without you, but I know that you would disagree with me. And truthfully, if I can bear this loss, it will be because of who you were and the impact that you had on my life. I also want to say that I will miss you. I will miss the actual conversations, but I can still hear you in my head and feel you in my consciousness. You are part of me and will live in my thoughts as long as I have breath in me. Good-bye, my friend until I can see you again.

So very sorry to hear of this loss. As my grade 9 English teacher he was a little terrifying as we tried to live up to expectations. By grade 13 I had grown enough to fully appreciate his teaching methods and looked forward to every class. He challenged us to think analytically and never settle for the status quo. By far my most influential teacher. Rest in peace sir - not gonna lie I am still a little scared of you.

I had Mr Matijczyk for grade 11 English. He was one of my favourite teachers. Tough, challenging, and fair. He also inspired me to have courage to be myself and forge forward. I have a picture of him and I at the end of grade 13 in the library of St Mary’s. Rest In Peace.
