Obituary of Randy Scott
SCOTT, Randy Allan
Randy Allan Scott, son of Walter Allan Scott and Greta Cheeseborough, grew up in Whitby, ON. Despite being academically inclined, going on to study at the University of Toronto, teenage Randy also enjoyed football, wrestling, and playing drums in a rock band. He received his PhD in 1977, specializing in renaissance literature. He then taught in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics at York University for forty-five years. In his pursuit of linguistic excellence in both French and Italian, he also lived abroad, studying at the Sorbonne in Paris, the University of Perugia, and in Padova in Italy. Along with courses on French and Italian literature and culture, Randy spent many laborious years researching and producing the first English translation of a difficult work of medieval French on the topic of witchcraft and demonology in the Middle Ages. He read voraciously on a wide range of topics, and his collection of books could easily fill a small local library. Randy will be remembered in particular for his care and concern for others, whether family, students, or colleagues. After retirement, Randy enthusiastically participated in his church and local community, offering thoughtful interpretations of religious literature and helping immigrant families resettle. We will miss his kind and generous nature, his sense of humour, and his love of good food. He is survived by his sister Trudy, his first wife Karen, his wife Roberta, his three daughters Krista (partner Pete), Elissa (husband Sean), and Kayla (husband Andrew), and grandchildren Halen, Quinlan, and Sloane. He was fondly adored by Chris Dixon, Craig Broughton (wife Brenda), and Garth Broughton (wife Kelly). He will also be missed by many other extended family and friends. Friends will be received at the Donald V. Brown Funeral Home, 36 Lake Avenue Drive, Stoney Creek on Sunday, November 10, 2019 from 1-4 p.m. Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at Church of Our Saviour The Redeemer, 25 Lake Avenue S., Stoney Creek at 12 noon. Cremation to follow. In Randy’s memory, donations to Covenant House Toronto or Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice would be greatly appreciated. Notes of sympathy and condolence may be left at www.donaldvbrown.ca
