My heart is crushed when I first heard of Devan. My heart goes with the family of this tragic death. He did not deserve this. He was handsome young man with a heart full of love.
I don't know the family or Devan. I have been following this story from the beginning. I am here for support love and sending prayers.
Everyday I think of Devan and the family. I am disgusting how the school has handle this.
No one should have to bury their child.

o.m.g. i cannot imagine, what you both as parents are going through, I have family in Hamilton. bullying stinks!!! our laws need to be changed. for both: the offender/s and the victims. but they won't, until how many of our children, have too die? I can't imagine to begin to to understand or feel what Devan's mother and siblings and closest family and other family members are going through. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Your son was a beautiful soul. I am sickened and distraught at what happened. My only wish is that the school and board are sued and that a law is passed in Devan's name and memory, "Devan's law" for a change in the legal system to make serious bullying, anything that Devan and many of his friends went through, to be immediately punishable by law including expelling from school immediately, jail time for the bullies and their parents as the main culprits and loss of job for the principal in case this is not followed through on.
Dearest Devan, you had a beautiful family, a loving girlfriend and dear close friends in your short life. You had passions and goals. You will live on forever in the hearts and memories of everyone, even complete strangers such as myself. I wish I would have been there to protect you. My own daughter used to be bullied by mean girls. I gave them and their parents hell since the school wouldn't do anything meaningful so I know how hard it must have been for your and your family. You will live on Devan. You are now immortal.I know that with your big heart, you are now a guardian angel watching over those who love you the most. God Bless you Devan and forgive us for failing you. As a mother myself, my heart is shattered for your mother and my tears won't stop...I wish I knew you and that I could hug you and protect you. I live in Toronto and through the news I heard of Devan's tragic passing. What a senseless act of cruelty by these two individuals and the by bystanders who could have assisted but did nothing. Shame on them!
As we mourn Devan's passing let this terrible tragedy serve as a learning experience for Devan's peers and certainly a teachable moment for the parents of the perpetrators.

What really upsets me is the system here failed to help .nobody helped him and this innocent guy asked for help and nobody listen to him and this bullying went on for weeks. Theres no system here in this country its always the good people who end up dead and the law comes when they r gone its horrible. These guys r very sick and deserve to be locked up and never see light again it awful dieing thst way for no reason at all. It is hard to stop the tears. This is overwhelmingly sad, and heartbreaking. I didn't know Devan, but what was told about him, reminds me very much of my own children. I wish I, and my sons could have met him. I am too far away to hug Shari Ann and her family physically, but I will hug them with my prayers. I pray Jesus will wrap the whole family in His love and comfort them all, through this very difficult time.
No one should ever be hurt like that, bullied like that. I pray God brings justice , and an end to all that negative behavior, and the way it is often brushed aside when people try to get help .

I am so terrible sorry to read of this horrible tragedy.
Having lost a child myself, there is nothing more painful. That word doesn't even come close to describing the physical, emotional and mental anguish. It never goes away. You grew this person inside of you and made a connection unlike any other.

I am so heartbroken to learn of the tragic loss of Devan. The world morns with his mother and family. I have never met him but heard about his mom and Devan through cat rescue networks. Teaching a child compassion with animals and seeing how he volunteered with many cats following his mothers love. Truly shows what an amazing young man he was. I have many nice memories of Devan from the time I was lucky enough to spend time with him while he was in grade 7 and 8. Although sometimes hidden by his shy exterior, Devan had a wonderful sense of humour and a wit that would catch me off guard and make me smile on many occasions. I loved hearing about his love for animals and stories about his grandpa. Devan will always be remembered as a kind and sweet hearted person.

As a human being and especially as the mother of a beautiful young daughter, it breaks my heart and pains my very soul to know that your wonderful, sweet, kind and sensitive son was taken in such a brutal and tragic way by a barbaric and senseless act of a coward who obviously did not have a heart, nor a soul nor a shred of human decency. "There can be no bigger tragedy than a parent facing death of his/her child. What has befallen you is a far bigger tragedy than facing death of a child, a young child murdered in front of a parent is an incomprehensible tragedy. We have a tradition that when a deceased is descended into the grave; a close relative assists by stepping inside the grave, except when a child is to be buried father does not ; because the pain would be unbearable. Mother is closer to her children than father; my kids are very close to me, but they are much more so to their mother.
I have no words to console you as your tragedy finds me in need for consolation, yours is inconsolable. I have a teen ager who just entered grade 9 this September as Devan did. I grieve for Devan, we all grieve for your son with you.
I wish the healing dust of time takes away the sharpens of pain leaving behind memories of Devan that is a source of peace, comfort and strength. I wish those responsible to never see the sun shine upon their faces, but your closure is not in their doom, rather in seeking to keep his memories alive for you and for all of us.
I strongly urge you not let this tragedy go in vain; keep it alive. Bring it back every October as we bring Terry Fox back. Bring it back to shake our collective conscience so violently that all the souls within it wake up, let him be a watchman over the bullied, the bullying who is about to bully and all of us so never a parent has to see his child slain in front of her.
In the end I like to remind you that the dead have simply passed away, not perished. They are in reality always with us, their memories dissolve in our souls to become light that illuminates until the reunion.

I was a teacher. You are right, THEY don't do anything. Many times I sent students to the office, only to have them return shortly after. When students should have been suspended they were only spoken to. I don't know why. THEY say there is zero tolerance for bullying, but THEY tolerate it. The administration (principal and vice-principal) are extremely lenient. I don't know the answer. Maybe the education minister needs to put policies in place where the administration is forced to remove bullies from the school. THEY need to put the victims of bullying first.

I am soo sorry for your loss as a mother who's son was bullied bad especially in elementary school I can't not imagine what your family is going threw right now. My heart breaks for you. This city and the schools need to do more then just a pink shirt day for it because I called police when my son was in grade 4 and grade 8 students followed him saying death threats. This should not be acceptable. It's sad we as a community had to hear about your loss of your son to finally wanna stand up to the school boards to do something now. He did not die in vien but it is super heart breaking that he did not get to fully experience an amazing full life he deserved. My family prays for your family to heal from this.

I did not know your son or family but in spite of this horrible tragedy we strangers are learning of him, his struggles and what he loved in life. I am oh so sorry! My heart is breaking that such horrors happened. Yikes! Are we supposed to all just move on, quietly? I can’t. Change must happen! I don’t know how, or when, but count me in. I did not know Devan but my heart is broken for you. It is one of the saddest things I've ever heard. My son was bullied mercilessly all through High School. The school did absolutely nothing. When kids would try to follow him home, he would walk right past our house so they wouldn't know where he lived. I would hide in bushes follow him home from a distance to make sure he made it home safe and that no one was following us. He even stood up to one of the bullies once and got suspended. There has to be a safe alternative in place for schooling kids that are being tormented. His photo even reminded me of the way my son was at that age. God bless you and know many people are thinking of you and feeling your pain and sadness.

Rest in paradise Devan. You did not deserve the abuse and violence that you endured at the hands of those bullies. Had I somehow have known what was going on I would have stuck up for you and been your friend and so would have a lot of people. To Devan's family: I did not know you or your son but this tragedy has affected me very deeply like it has so many not only in Hamilton but across Canada and around the world. My heart is broken for you and the fact that this has taken place in our community at a school is outrageous and unacceptable. I think that I can speak for all decent people when I say that there has to be a change in the laws and at the schools with how bullying is dealt with so that another tragedy like this can hopefully be prevented. In the name of Devan Selvey I urge everyone to write, call and show up at the HWDSB, City Hall, the police chiefs office, the Education Minister and your MPP's office and demand changes to the youth justice act, police response policy to bullying and the schools bullying policies. Make some noise for Devan and turn this into an opportunity for real change so that his positive legacy can live on for many years and save lives. I have and will continue to cry for the loss of this wonderful young man and I send my deepest condolences to his family, friends and the rest of our community during this difficult time. This is a huge loss for all of us.

I pray that this senseless act of violence brings about badly needed changes to prevent bullying and the violence that comes with it. If nothing else, Devan's death serves as proof that drastic change is required by those who create our laws, the schools that should be taking more steps to protect the students in their care, and the attitudes of our Justice system and their enforcers.

I met Devan and his family this year through the junior youth program that Devan sometimes went. He would come with his friend Mickey. He stood out, he was always quieter than the rest, he came off as a very polite and matured boy. His hood over his head almost makes me feel like he was in deep thoughts all the time. I don’t know if his family would remember this, but one time me, my friend nava and chayan went to visit devan’s family. I remember his sister calling him her “babyyy brother” and how much she loved him. I also remember feeling how close Devan was with his mother. I saw a different side of Devan when I was with the both of them. Devan seemed more comfortable, less shy. Having a lot of fun at the front yard pretending that he’s gonna drive his mom’s car while we have the conversation. I got to know how much this family loves animals that day. That devan’s sister was expecting a baby...
my prayers are with Devan, and Devan’s family. And as a youth I feel empowered to contribute as much as I can to the younger generation, this generation needs moral education, I promise that I’ll never stop working towards this, even if it will take a very long time, we need to start aiming high.

Devan was in the grade 8 graduating class with my son, Koen, at Viscount. Koen tells me that he only had one year with Devan in his classroom which was when he started at Viscount in grade 6. I didn't know your son, but I do remember him entering the auditorium and walking down the isle towards the stage on graduation day! I remember him because his purple hair caught my eye and I seem to recall someone hollering (likely a family member) something at him like 'put a smile on your face!' :) I chose to light a purple candle in his memory as my son tells me Devan liked purple (hence the colour of his hair back in June). :) Out of such a tragic occurrence we've all connected to Devan's struggle with the bullying and have also learned what a beautiful young man you were raising. Mother to mother, I have mad respect for you. His memory will be a dignified one because your shared stories and memories of Devan tell us and show us all that he was raised with a strong moral compass - a beautiful soul! Well done to you Mom! Devan's last words of "I wasn't raised like that" I hear resonate with his longtime childhood friend Mikey. Devan's influence lives on and has caused a ripple effect or rather more like a tidal wave effect that extends far beyond Hamilton. We're all with you on this journey. Seeking change. I am deeply sorry for your loss. I only know your son from the news. But it hit me hard. I was always bullied as a child up until i was old enough to quit school. I remember a time in grade 7. If it was not for one person whom i dont know of. They reported to the principal of a planned attack with a knife against me. It probably saved my life. My parents where just told to transfer me. I had the pleasure of meeting this young man last summer at Willow Lake RV Resort in Scotland . He and his friend Chelsey were at the wood sign class that my daughter Caroline Townsend put together for the teens of the park. He was so quiet and shy.It wasn't till the end of the class that he started to talk to us. By then well he just was so comical and well versed. He did mention his passion for cars. I thought wow this child will go places. Boy was I wrong.
