Obituary of David Alton Buchanan

BUCHANAN, David Alton

Went to be with the love of his life, May, on Monday, August 27, 2018 at Arbour Creek Long Term Care and is now in the presence of the Lord. David was in his 86th year- born in Donkin, Cape Breton Nova Scotia to Daniel and Mary Buchanan. He was predeceased by siblings John, William, Charlotte Christina, Harvey, Charles, Peter and Robert. David married his childhood sweetheart, May Lorain Hancock. He gave her their first kiss and their last. Together they loved and raised three children David Kent (grandson Leo and family); Dale (wife Silvana), grandson Jacob (Nicole) (great-granddaughter Natalie May); and Gloria. David was loved and cherished by many special nieces and nephews from the east to west coast. As a young man he worked in the New Aberdeen 1B Coal Mine, Glace Bay NS, joined Service Corp 3 RCHA J Battery as a Cook and served in the Korean War, Debert NS, Gagetown NB, Winnipeg MN. Moving his family to Hamilton in 1962, David worked at Gulliver’s Travels, Hanson Transport and as a Switchman and Janitor at Stelco retiring after 30 years. Throughout his life David was known to have an entertaining sense of humour and as a loyal friend that was generous with his time to lend a hand where ever he could. In the community he was involved as a hockey coach with Squirts and Huskies at the Hamilton Forum, Parkdale Arena and Hamilton Double Rinks. All that knew him could attest to his die-hard loyalty as a Toronto Maple Leaf and Blue Jays fan. The family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers and support from family and friends, too many to mention but David was really grateful for all you did! A special thank you to Dr. Paul Andrus, Dr. Phan and Dr. Alan Kitching for their excellent care of David and all staff of Arbour Creek Long Term Care that treated him with love, kindness and dignity! Your tribute to David and May is to love deeply, forgive quickly and don’t take each other for granted. Friends will be received at the Donald V. Brown Funeral Home, 36 Lake Avenue Drive, Stoney Creek on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, August 30, 2018 at 11 a.m. in the Funeral Home Chapel. Interment to follow at Tapleytown Cemetery. In David’s memory, donations to Diabetes Canada, Heart and Stroke Foundation or the charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
