Stella came from a family of can do , strong resilient women. Growing up in rural Manitoba when tractors were few and horses the mainstay of farming , the men usually handled the tractors and horses whereas the women did most of the manual labor. Well there came a time for a woman , our Stella, to do a man's job and drive a team of horses with a cutter to cut grass to make hay for the winter. Now a cutter is a two wheel machine with what would look like a 7 ft. hedge trimmer mounted on one side. The driver sits precariously perched on a metal seat just above the exposed clattering metal teeth just below. As one can imagine , this is a dangerous farm machine known for many gory accidents. All alone , Stella was cutting grass at the margin of the meadow when the cutting bar disturbed a wasp's nest. In an instant , the horses bolted. Had she lost her balance , it would have been a calamity. To her credit , she skillfully regained control of the horses and with the resilience and determination she is known for went back to work.
