Obituary of Leslie Awrey Murphy

MURPHY, Leslie Awrey

June 9, 1933 – February 19, 2018

Les Murphy has felled his last tree. On Monday February 19, 2018 Les passed away on his own terms from the effects of a stroke.  He leaves behind his wife Lois of 60 years, sons Larry (Debbie), Brian, Doug (Lori) and grandchildren Dan, Brendan (Ellen), Adam, Megan, Sara and Bradley. He is also survived by his siblings Stanley, Enid, and Earl, his brother-in-law Bill, sister in law June, and many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his brother Gord, sister Lois, sister-in-law Jean and brother-in-law Barry.  Les was a partner in Armstrong Feeds and also operated the family farm on Guyatt Road. The continuing success of these businesses is a testament to the lessons he taught and the amazing work ethic that he exemplified. He was the consummate farmer who never really retired; daily crop tours and helping at the family farm were a part of his life until the day of his stroke.  Les loved gardening, the great outdoors and sports of all types, particularly hockey and baseball. He was a proud supporter of amateur sports in his hometown of Binbrook as a coach, a sponsor, and quietly behind the scenes. He worked tirelessly for many years to ensure that kids had the facilities and the opportunities to play, his efforts as a member of the Arena Committee culminating with the building of the Glanbrook Arena and Sports Park.  The family would like to thank Dr. Juriansz as well as the incredible staff at both the Hamilton General Hospital Acute Stroke Ward and St. Peter’s Palliative Care Unit for their extraordinary compassion and care.  For those of you who wish to pay your respects to Les and his family, visitation will be held at the Donald V. Brown Funeral Home, 36 Lake Avenue Drive, Stoney Creek, on Friday, February 23, 2018 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. A private family service will follow.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that those wishing to honour Les consider making a donation to Glanbrook Community Services (formerly Glanbrook Home Support) or the Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation.  Notes of Sympathy and condolence may be made at www.donaldvbrown.ca

Les leaves big work boots to fill…..he will be sorely missed.
