Obituary of Innes (Irene) Hunter
HUNTER, Innes (Irene), RN (nee Harrison)
February 21, 1923 – January 22, 2018
Irene always said she lived a charmed life surrounded by her family. She and her husband Gord, who predeceased her, have a daughter, Patricia Douglas (Mel) and sons Bill (Gail) and Geoff (Ranka). In the family circle are 5 wonderful grandchildren, Scott (Lauren), Erin (Ben), Derek (Lisa), Jeremy, and Lindsay plus 4 delightful great-grandchildren Claire, Emmett, Georgia, and Avery.
Raised on the family farm in Stoney Creek with her parents Aileen and Arnott Harrison, she was the middle child between her sister Thelma Buscombe (Ed) and brother Neil (Ann). After graduating from Saltfleet High School and being named Miss Stoney Creek she went on to nursing school at the Hamilton General Hospital. Irene was a long-time resident of the Creek – Irene Avenue is named after her.
Exploring different parts of the world on her many travels, volunteering with children, immigrant families and the cancer clinic, starting a recycling program in her winter home in Bradenton, Florida, playing bridge and golf were some of her passions. She was always positive, enthusiastic and upbeat.
Nursing became her chosen field after a stint as one of the earliest stewardesses at Trans Canada airlines – now Air Canada. She loved the energy of the Emergency Room and was the head nurse until her retirement from Hamilton General Hospital.
Ending this life story, we would like to thank the second floor staff of Albright Centre for their kindness and caring. Irene passed away peacefully at Albright in her ninety-fifth year. A memorial service will be held at a future date.
Good night, Irene. We will miss you but we’ll see you in our dreams.
