Obituary of Joyce Slusarchuk
SLUSARCHUK, Joyce (Koblyk)
Died peacefully at St. Joseph’s Hospital on Saturday, October 28 at the age of 89. Born in the Northern Ontario railway stop of Oba, Joyce grew up in Hamilton’s North End. After completing grade four, she left school to care for her younger brother George following the death of their mother. Joyce and “Georgie” were inseparable then, and remained devoted to one another throughout their lives. Joyce herself tried only briefly to return to school, but despite her lack of academic credentials, she eventually earned a job at one of Canada’s major banks – an accomplishment of which she was justifiably proud. A talented seamstress and crafter, Joyce was an active member of Hamilton’s Ukrainian community through much of her life. When she moved into St. Joseph’s Villa in Dundas a decade ago, she flourished, becoming a tireless volunteer and president of the Residents’ Council. Joyce’s greatest joy was her extended family – her nephew, niece and two grandnieces, all of whom she called her “sweeties.” Joyce was the cherished wife of the late Dmytrow Slusarchuk (2008) and the much-loved older sister of the late George Koblyk (2016). She will be missed by her “sweeties” – nephew Scott Koblyk (Patty), niece Liz Koblyk (Scott Bunyan) and grandnieces Alexandra and Miranda. Cremation has taken place and the family will be holding a private service. Notes of sympathy and condolence are welcome at www.donaldvbrown.ca
