Obituary of Raymond Arnold Ross

ROSS, Raymond Arnold

Raymond Arnold Ross, in his 86th year, passed away peacefully at home, after a brief illness, in the presence of his family. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 49 years, Donna (Morrice), his parents, Henry and Margaret Ross and his sister, Edna Gray. He is survived by his three sons, Glen, Gary (Maryanne), Greg (Cheryl) and grandchildren Raymond and Raylene along with many cousins, nieces and nephews.  Ray was born in the east end of Hamilton in 1932 in a house on Glendale Ave. He was an avid hockey player and joined the hometown Junior B team, the Hamilton Aerovox. From there he moved up to the Junior A Kroehlers in Stratford, ON, where he met his future bride, Donna. The next season he became a member of the Guelph Biltmores of the OHA, who went on to win the Memorial Cup in 1952. After his junior career was finished, he went on to carve out a career mostly in the American Hockey League where he won two Calder Cups with the Cleveland Barons and one with the Rhode Island Reds. In 1974 he was elected to the Rhode Island Reds Hall of Fame.  After his hockey playing career was over, he became a long time employee of The Hamilton Spectator, where he forged many dear friendships. Later in life he was able to re-connect with several former teammates and friends, thanks to the Rhode Island Reds Heritage Society which holds an annual reunion every summer in RI. It was an event he loved and looked forward to every year.  Many thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff on 5West at Hamilton General Hospital and the staff of the CCAC and Bayshore Home Health . Cremation has taken place. Friends will be received at Donald V. Brown Funeral Home, 36 Lake Avenue Drive, Stoney Creek on Wednesday, June 7, 2017 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, please choose a charity that is near-and-dear to your heart and donate to help their cause.
