Obituary of Mary Lou Smillie

SMILLIE, Mary Lou June 13, 1944 – November 9, 2016 Mary Lou died peacefully on November 9th at the McNally House Hospice, surrounded by her loving family. A devoted wife and mother, she is survived by her husband, Jim, sons Robert (partner Lori) and Christopher, granddaughters Julia and Allison, great granddaughter Adelyn, sister Jacqueline Styles (Geoff), sisters-in-law Patricia Edge (Cam) and Lillian Kopysh (Barry). She was deeply loved by her nephews and nieces. Mary Lou is predeceased by her parents Alice and Thomas Riordan. A lifelong resident of Hamilton and nearby Stoney Creek, Mary Lou leaves many friends and neighbours to mourn her. She will also be missed by the numerous homeless cats for whom she found or provided a home for. During her battle with pancreatic cancer, she received wonderful attention from the staff of the Juravinski Cancer Centre in Hamilton and in her final days, at the McNally House Hospice in Grimsby. The family extends a very special thanks to the staff and volunteers at McNally House. At Mary Lou’s request, cremation has taken place and she will be buried at Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of her Life on Thursday, November 24, 2016 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at St. Lawrence Hall, 475 Mary Street in Hamilton. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the McNally House Hospice, 148 Central Ave. Grimsby, ON L3M 4Z3 or a charity of your choice.
