Norm has been a great friend for many years. He and Willis taught together for many years, worked together on a building project, and shared many laughs and frustrations when they were landlords renting houses in lower Hamilton.
Norman had a wonderful philosophical look on life: he was accepting of cultures and differing outlooks and loved to hear about people and their lives. He sincerely cared about his students and his friends. He used to let us use his car when he went to Mexico - supposedly, so that it would not sit idle!
After Willis died, Norman and I stayed connected and always had Swiss Chalet when he came back from Mexico.
I was in B.C. when he died,or I would have been at his funeral. He was a man of honour, integrity, intelligence and acceptance. I will miss him!

I had the pleasure of working with Norm at Saltfleet when I was Head of English there for one year. Norm was a dedicated, highly intelligent and kind man who had much integrity and was always courageous in speaking his mind and the truth, but always
like a gentleman. He had much care and concern for his students and their education.
Many students were fortunate to benefit from his teaching philosophy. Norm was always his own person, and a joy to talk to and a wonderful colleague. He had an eternally calm and patient demeanor and a keen and insightful mind. My husband was amazed to discover that he and Norm share the same great great grandfather through their discussions of their relatives and ancestry. We will miss Norm and the world will be less rich without his presence. We wish to express our sincere condolences to Norm's family and to all the friends who held Norm dear. He was a truly wise and good man.

We will remember Norm fondly....his intelligence, his sense of humor, his ability to laugh at himself and his absent mindedness. We quote his "when I need to wear socks in my sandals, it is time to go to Mexico. And how he could not remember what he had just eaten for supper (while sitting at the table) until he saw plum stones on the edge of his plate. Gene remembers discussions on "being and nothingness" and sharing various ideas while living the the Edmonton house and at school in Lamont. Betty remembers the young peoples hay ride when Norm looked down to see he had only one peanut shell rubber on his foot. He went to throw it away only to discover he had 2 rubbers on one foot. Norm was very tolerant of others and their idea. He always gave more to life than he took.

My path crossed by chance with Norm's in Oaxaca. With our shared interest in the Mexican culture and language, we made an immediate connection. The Spanish word "sympatica" describes someone who is friendly and open towards people; someone who inspires others with the freedom to be who they are, without the fear of being judged. Adios con abrazos y besos mi amigo. You will be sadly missed.

I was astonished to hear of Norman's passing. I had received an email from him about his back issues that led to his return from Mexico but did not realize that his condition was so fatally serious.
Norman was a student colleague and a room mate in university. Together with other room mates we had some magnificent times together. Later, whenever he would pass through any location where we lived, he would stop by for a visit, and sometimes make very specific plans to come out of his way for a visit. We had many interesting conversations, some of them quite intense, and always intellectually stimulating. I will miss his emails and his reflections on various current themes and on his retirement experiences. I extend my condolences to all his immediate family and trust that his memory will be a source of comfort to everyone who knew him well.

Please accept our condolences on the loss of Norman. He was a good friend. We recall that he was interested in everyone, every thing, and every idea. We especially appreciated that when he came to Alberta he always arranged in some manner to meet with a group of his university friends. We cherish those times.

Mr. Deckert was an amazing teacher. He made the old literature interesting, and helped develop my love of reading. I only remember a few of the teachers names from Saltfleet, and Mr. Deckert stands out as one of my favourites. I was saddened to hear of his passing. My thoughts are with the family at this difficult time.

From:Chuck Crockford, Waterloo, ON
Imagine my surprise (and shock) when I was reading the obituary page of the 'Kitchener Record' and came across Norm's obituary. I met Norm when he and I were undergraduate education students at the University of Alberta, probably due to the fact that in many of our education courses students were seated alphabetically, and, even in those days of educational change, "D" still followed "C".
Norm and I indulged in many between-class discussions, and I can remember his telling me that one of his English professors gave his class a weekly quiz; Norm had a friendly contest going with a classmate, and, if I remembere correctly, Norm did as you would expect and quietly but steadily came out on top.
I lost touch with Norm after graduation, and I was surprised to read that that he had been teaching "down the road" only a couple of hours away. If I had known we could have carried on our discussions, and solved some of the world's problems--ha!
Farewell, dear friend. I will have a cup of coffee in your honour, and pretend I am doing so with you sitting across from me in a campus coffee shop fifty years ago. Peace.
