Obituary of Michael Bernard O'Neill
It is with the deepest sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Michael at St Joseph’s Hospital on July 4, 2014. He was 93. He was a loving and devoted husband to Anne Elizabeth (nee Nelligan), his wife and best friend of more than 70 years. She has been the love of his life since the day they first met. Michael was the proud father of Michael Jr. (Susan), Mary Anne Ewer (Mark), Kevin, and John (Deb). He was also a special grandfather of Paul and Michael Ewer, Michael David O’Neill, and Katelyn, Laura, and Christine O’Neill . He was always thrilled to have them around and enjoyed their antics immensely. Michael took great delight in his family; the focus of all his attention. He worked tirelessly to make their life as happy and full as possible. No effort was too great. He selflessly spent all his free time with them. He was a most caring and kind father and husband. With his own hands he built a beautiful home for everyone, and took great pleasure seeing his family happy and thriving. This gentle and honourable man is now forever gone from our midst. Michael is predeceased by his parents Alexandra (1970) and Edward (1960). He is survived by his brother Pat (Myrtle). Michael served his country as a Radar Officer in the RCAF during World War II. He had a 30 year career with Canada Customs, after which at age 55 he was able to enjoy a long and healthy retirement with Anne. During this time they travelled extensively. Their happiest times were spent at Killbear Park in Parry Sound, where they enjoyed many summers camping with family and friends, in their favoured environment of natural beauty. They sailed, swam, hiked, and otherwise got the most fun and enjoyment they could out of the serenity of this idyllic setting. Michael lived a life full of love and support. No regrets. His family would like to recognize the wonderful care received from CCAC, especially the thoughtful and compassionate help from Betty. We also wish to acknowledge the exceptional level of attention Michael received from the dedicated team of doctors, nurses, and all other staff of St Joseph’s Hospital. They do demonstrate a belief in their motto “it is an honour to serve the sick”, and their empathy and kind attention to detail were appreciated so very much by Michael and his family. Visitation will be held at the Donald V. Brown Funeral Home, 36 Lake Avenue Drive, Stoney Creek, on Monday, July 7, 2014 from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Vigil prayers will be offered at 8:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at 10 a.m. at St Francis Xavier Church, 304 Highway #8, in Stoney Creek. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations be directed to the St Joseph’s Hospital Foundation, or the Charity of your choice.
