Obituary of Sylvia Maud Jewell
It is with deep sadness that our family announces the passing of Sylvia on August 25, 2015, when she slipped away peacefully. Beloved wife, mother and grandmother and a very good friend to many, Sylvia was well known for her grace, humour, strength of convictions, and loving kindness. She enjoyed theatre, opera, nature, volunteering, history, debating and being with family and friends. Sylvia was born in Hastings, England in 1928 and lived there with her parents and three siblings June, John and Yvonne. During World War II, the family was moved to Yeovil where she later met the love of her life – Frank Ashton Jewell. They married in 1950 and set sail for Canada arriving in time for Thanksgiving. Frank and Sylvia had two children in the 1950′s. Sylvia had a passion for advocacy and politics and in the late 1960′s ran for public office. As a journalist, Sylvia worked at the Stoney Creek News and The Hamilton Spectator for many years. Predeceased by her husband in 1989, Sylvia leaves behind two daughters Elizabeth Jewell Wittmer (Wayne), Frances Jewell, and granddaughter Emily Wittmer. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Sylvia’s life will take place on Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at 3 p.m. at Christ’s Church Cathedral (252 James Street North, Hamilton, www.cathedralhamilton.ca).
