Obituary of Sheila Thomson

THOMSON, Sheila (Dewar) Suddenly after a stroke at McMaster University Medical Centre on Wednesday, August 25, 2010, Sheila Thomson (Dewar), born September 25, 1910 in Greenock, Scotland, in her 100th year. Well-loved mother of Sheila Hannah (Bill) of Hamilton, Fiona Cormie (Bill) of Scotland and Trina Webber (Dennis) of Grimsby. Grandmother of Anne, Elinor, John, Kevin and Chris. Great-grandmother of Liam, Claire, Callum, Owen, Sally and Lisa. Sheila emigrated to Canada and a new life with her husband Duncan Dewar in 1964 having survived World War II in the midst of the bombing of the River Clyde and following years of successful business in Scotland. She and Duncan raised their family in Scotland and decided to follow their eldest daughter Sheila to Canada for new opportunities. What spirit at the age of 54 and her husband in his 70’s! She worked for 15 years in the General Hospital as a Food Supervisor before her retirement. After the death of Duncan in 1969 she was alone for several years before marrying Wilf Thomson in 1975. They enjoyed round dancing and square dancing with many friends as well as travelling to Hawaii and the Caribbean. After Wilf’s death in 2006, Sheila continued to drive her car and live independently until an illness in 2007. She has appreciated leaving household chores to others and relaxing in a retirement home up until the present. She did enjoy going out for a drive, lunch or shopping, or to sit in Sheila’s garden then enjoy a home cooked meal. She was an avid reader all her life of both library books and the daily newspaper. Sheila remained sharp as a tack until her last few days, enjoying all the family happenings, news from the Scottish clan, current events, a joke and a good laugh. She continued to amaze people by her youthful appearance and upbeat spirit. She will be fondly remembered for her independent spirit and determination, an example to us all. Rest easy in His arms, Mum. Grateful thanks to the medical team on Ward 3Y for their compassionate care. A private family interment will take place. A Memorial Service will be held at the Donald V. Brown Funeral Home, 36 Lake Avenue Drive, Stoney Creek on Wednesday, September 1 at 1 p.m. (due to road construction enter Lake Ave. from King St.) As an expression of sympathy, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
