Obituary of Norman Earl Soley
SOLEY, Norman Earl
Entered into rest November 4, 2013 at Juravinski Hospital in Hamilton at age 79. Devoted husband, loving father, farmer, OPP officer, handyman and collector of corny jokes. Survived by loving wife of 54 years Betty, and sons Norman (Ann) of Toronto and Jeffrey (Cheryl) of Orillia, uncle of Evalyn and Dianne. Predeceased by brother Harold.
Born at home on Mount Albion Road in Saltfleet Township to Percy and Ella Soley, Earl worked the family farm and worked as an automotive electrical technician before joining the OPP in 1963 where he served in Burlington and Smithville detachments and OPP headquarters, retiring in 1994. Earl was a member of the OPP competitive pistol shooting team throughout his career and won many awards in competition throughout North America. He shot the first ever perfect target in police competition. Earl maintained involvement in target shooting of all forms and served as a FSESO safety instructor for 18 years.
Earl was a lifelong member of the Rymal Road Community Church and he and Betty volunteered countless hours to help run the Maple Grove Christian Retreat Centre, in Thamesford, Ontario. Visitation will be held at the Donald V. Brown Funeral Home, 36 Lake Ave Drive, Stoney Creek, on Tuesday, November 5, 2013 from 7-9 p.m. and on Wednesday, November 6, 2013 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Service at the Rymal Road Community Church, 1967 Rymal Rd. (at Fletcher’s Rd.) on Thursday, November 7, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. Interment in the Free Methodist Cemetery immediately following the service.
