Obituary of Sandra Ruth MacKay-Szabo

MACKAY-SZABO, Sandra Ruth (nee Ashenhurst) Sandra Ruth MacKay-Szabo,(nee Ashenhurst) 71, of Stoney Creek, passed away peacefully in her home on Tuesday, December 1, 2009. Sandy was born May 12, 1938, in Toronto to Dr. Alexander and Lois Ashenhurst. She was a graduate of the Toronto General Hospital School of Nursing and spent her life making a wonderful home for her family. She’s a former member of St. James Anglican Church in Dundas and was an active member of the Church of Our Saviour the Redeemer in Stoney Creek. Sandy is survived by her loving husband, Alex Szabo; her children of whom she was very proud: David (Mary Ellen) of Oakville; Susan (Paul) Buchanan of Ancaster; Graeme (Wendi) of Hamilton; Danny (Lisa) of Toronto; Alex Szabo of Toronto and Mary Szabo of Toronto. Her greatest joys in life were her grandchildren: Jordan and Devon MacKay; Meghan, Hayley and Emma Buchanan; Gillian and Jacqueline MacKay; Grace and Isabella MacKay and Stephen Szabo of Toronto. She is also survived by her brothers, Dr. Alex Ashenhurst of Georgetown; Jim Ashenhurst of Mississauga; sister-in-law Judy Marshall of Georgetown and brother-in-law Peter Joyce of Ottawa, along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister Marcella Joyce and infant granddaughter, Katherine Reese MacKay. Visitation will be Sunday, December 6, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Donald V. Brown Funeral Home, 36 Lake Avenue Drive, Stoney Creek. The funeral service will take place, Monday, December 7, at 1 p.m. at the Church of Our Saviour the Redeemer, 25 Lake Avenue South, Stoney Creek. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sandy’s honour can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
