Diana Bernice Dougherty Obituary

(nee Hainsworth)

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts we announce the passing of Diana Dougherty after recently celebrating her 100th birthday. Beloved wife for 69 years of the late Bill Dougherty. Much loved mother of Eric (Lynn), Craig (Rosanne) and late Nancy (Joseph). Precious grandmother of Vanessa (Mark), Ryan, Carly (Tyler), Josie (Matt) and Regan (Kaz). Cherished great grandmother of Addison, Riley and Maxwell. Dearly remembered by sister Sally (Bob deceased), predeceased by sister Lois (Jack) and sister-in-law of late Helen and Lawrence. Dear Aunt to Mary Jane, Pam (deceased), Penny (Frank), Dale (Tom), John (Cindy), Elaine (John), and Alan (Kate). Predeceased by her loving parents Major Eric (Hainsworth) and Edna (Balbirnie).

Diana was a graduate of Cunningham Elementary, Delta High School and Strathallan College. She received her Registered Nurse training at the Hamilton General Hospital, Class of 1950(B). The programme provided both a rewarding vocation and a host of lifelong friends. Diana worked at the Hamilton General Hospital, Dr. Guyatt Sr’s Family Practice then returned to nursing at the Henderson Hospital Cancer Clinic after raising her family. Diana was a wise, kind and generous person who navigated life with intelligence, stoic resolve and a caring spirit. Diana’s legacy is in the values and love generated in the hearts of those left behind.

Diana was an active member and Sunday School teacher at Stoney Creek United Church. She enjoyed treasured family time at Lake Erie, Forest Rock Resort and their Paint Lake cottage. Diana and Bill cherished long scenic boat rides and she was often the driver for waterskiing. Together they loved to travel, spent many winters in Florida and summers up north. Diana enjoyed watching tennis, golf and was a loyal Blue Jays and Tiger Cat fan. She enjoyed playing cards and socializing with her friends.

The family wishes to sincerely thank the staff of Wentworth Heights and Wentworth Lodge who provided Diana kind and compassionate care. We are eternally grateful. Cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held at Donald V. Brown Funeral Home with interment at Mountview Gardens Cemetery, Stoney Creek.

The loss of Diana will leave a huge void in our family, yet the impact of her love and strength will remain in our memory. Donations to a local charity of your choice would be appreciated. Please leave condolences and memories online at www.donaldvbrown.ca.
