Lynn Carol Sutherland Obituary
(née Derue)
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Lynn Carol Sutherland (née Derue), in her 80th year, on May 30, 2026, at Juravinski Hospital in Hamilton. She passed peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family.
Predeceased by her parents, Earl and Ina Derue; sister, Deanna; brother-in-law, Brian Beckett; and nieces, Jennifer and Judith.
Lynn is lovingly remembered by her devoted husband of 57 years, Lee Sutherland, with whom she would have celebrated 58 years of marriage this August. Together, they built a life rich in love, partnership, and adventure. Lynn was a cherished mother to her son Sandy (Leigh Ann) and daughter Aimee, and a proud and adoring grandmother to Peyton, Kaeden, and Jaelyn, who brought her immeasurable joy.
Born and raised in Hamilton, Lynn remained deeply connected to her community throughout her life. She dedicated her career to education as an elementary school teacher with the Hamilton public school board. In her role as a librarian, she shared her lifelong love of books and reading, inspiring generations of young learners. During the years at W.H.Ballard School, she met a group of ladies that became the "The Ballard Broads" who still meet once a month for dinner.
Lynn approached life with curiosity and enthusiasm. She and Lee were fortunate to travel the world together, eventually visiting every continent—a remarkable achievement that reflected their shared sense of adventure. They held a special love for Hawaii, returning there many times over the years to enjoy its beauty, warmth, and spirit, which brought Lynn great happiness. Among her many experiences, Lynn held a special fondness for Antarctica, where meeting the penguins was a highlight she treasured.
At home, Lynn found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She was an avid baker, gardener, reader, and puzzle enthusiast, and she expressed her creativity through quilting. She also had a deep love for animals, especially her beloved Shih Tzus. She was predeceased by Poppy and Rascal, and her companion Bentley will miss her dearly.
Lynn deeply valued her friendships and the connections she nurtured throughout her life. She will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, and the genuine care she extended to those around her.
No words can fully express our gratitude for the thoughtful and dedicated medical care provided by Dr. Michael Schweitzer, Laura Mulligan RPN, and their team, who supported Lynn with compassion for many years. Thanks also to Salima and Thy of Remedy’s Rx Pharmacy for their guidance and care through many health challenges.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Hamilton Health Sciences for the many years of compassionate care provided to Lynn. The kindness and dedication shown to her and her family, especially in her final days, will always be deeply remembered. We are also sincerely grateful for the thoughtful support and kindness of neighbours, particularly David and Gina Costantino. Special thanks to her dear friend Diane Allingham for her unwavering help and support over the past few months.
Lynn leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and curiosity that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
Family and friends will be received at the Donald V. Brown Funeral Home, 36 Lake Avenue Drive, Stoney Creek on Saturday, June 13, 2026 from 2 - 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to to Hamilton Food Share.
