James 'Jim' Kenneth Carrol Obituary

On May 5th, Jim Carrol passed away peacefully surrounded by his family as a result of pancreatic cancer at St. Peter's Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario. Jim celebrated his 52nd wedding anniversary to his life-long love and dedicated wife, Janice Carrol, the day before his passing. He will be deeply missed by his beloved wife, Janice (née Laurie), and loving children Daniel (Sarah), Jennifer (Blake), and Jeffrey (Jessica). Jim was a blessed and loving Grandpa to his five beautiful and precious grandchildren, Jesse, Kyle, Charlotte, Simon, and Evan. He is also survived by his siblings, Janet (Brian), Robert (Carolyn), Peter (Petra) and brother in-law Brian (Tammy). He is predeceased by his brother Mark (Diane) and brother-in-law Gary (Vesna). His loss is also felt by his many nieces, nephews, friends, and former colleagues. We lovingly remember his predeceased parents, Kenneth and Phyllis Carrol, and in-laws, Lewis and Doris Laurie.

Born in Hamilton, Ontario to parents Kenneth and Phyllis Carrol, Jim was one of five children. As the oldest boy in the family, Jim took on the role of rascal-in-chief. When he wasn't pestering his siblings, he was making some sort of trouble, whether it was breaking windows at the nearby church with pellets or accidentally setting off homemade explosives in his parents' basement. Nowadays, we would consider that troublesome, but in the 1960's, that just meant you were precocious.

A forty-year employee of ArcelorMittal Dofasco, Jim worked for many years as a draftsman in the Engineering Department before relocating to the coke plants.

Jim was a respected and adored hockey coach for many years with the Dofasco Steelhawks. In the summer months, he coached baseball and soccer as well. He was a gifted coach and mentor to his players and his coaching staff. His years of coaching brought him a tremendous sense of pride. We won't be quick to forget all his hockey stories, including the season his team went undefeated. He was also able to share his hockey wisdom with another generation of players when his grandchildren began playing hockey. He watched countless games, cheering with pride and enthusiasm.

Jim was a gifted artist. His beautiful and detailed paintings are a heart-warming reminder of his colourful perspective on life. Woodworking was his greatest creative gift. For more than 20 years, Jim crafted the most intricate wood carvings with meticulous care. Under his hobby name, JKC Carvings, he frequented many craft shows. We are deeply honoured that so many of his pieces have been shared with friends and family so that we might look at them with fond memories of his loving and generous spirit.

It is impossible to sum up the life of Jim Carrol. He was so many things to so many people. He was an adoring and dedicated husband for 52 years. Jim and Janice loved taking long car rides, enjoying meals at local diners, gardening, and enjoying quiet moments together. Jim and Janice were a team. They enjoyed watching many hockey and football games together, cheering on their favourite teams, as well as snuggling up to watch their favourite shows. He was the best father you could ever wish for. His children, Dan, Jenn, and Jeff, remember him as an attentive dad who was involved in all the sports, all the activities, and never for a moment put his own needs ahead of those of his children. He had a deep connection to his grandchildren, who remember him as a hero and role-model. All those who have known Jim will remember his incredible sense of humour. He was naturally funny and shared his jokes, funny faces, and quick wit with every person he ever met. His legacy is one that will have a ripple-effect for generations. He would want us all to, "always look on the bright side of life."
