Henk Stuive Obituary

It is with deep sadness that the Stuive family announces the passing of Henk, he was a beloved sibling, uncle and friend to many.

Born, June 25, 1950 in the town of Deventer in the Netherlands, Henk was the oldest of 8 children born to Wiebrand and Harmina Stuive. In 1954 the family immigrated to Canada to start a new life. He was raised in Winona and attended John Knox Christian School and Winona High School. He enjoyed sports and many a Sunday afternoon was spent playing touch football or hockey with his brothers and friends from the Fruitland Christian Reformed Church.

Henk attended McMaster University and graduated with a degree in History. He began his career working as a manager at Woolco. On weekends Henk would visit the family on his motorcycle. Next came a variety of jobs: Niagara Steamatic Cleaners, Custodian at Metal Recovery Industries, Press Operator at Brabant News, and Custodian at the Hamilton School Board. He particularly enjoyed being a custodian at the school as it allowed him to interact with the teachers and be called Mr. Henk by all of the students. Finally in 2020 he retired from full time work but continued the family tradition of custodian of the Fifty United Church till the day of his death.

Henk, like his dad, was a very social person. He took time to talk to everyone and knew all of the cashiers at the local grocery store by name. Helping others characterized Henk as he would always be willing to assist family members with various tasks, and he took disabled residents in his apartment building shopping. He was also generous supporting many causes, particularly the Grimsby Life Center. History and politics were his passion as he read many history books and enjoyed discussing current events.

Most important to Henk was family. At functions he would take the time to socialize with all. Living in Grimsby allowed him to easily travel to and visit various family members and for those living further away he connected regularly by phone. He also made several trips to The Netherlands and Australia to connect with uncles, aunts, and cousins. On March 16th Henk made his final trip to be with his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Family and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Service on Friday, March 20, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. at Fifty United Church, Winona.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Grimsby Life Centre.
