Obituary of Adriana Hendrika Catier

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our dear Mother, Opoe, great and great-great Opoe, Adriana Hendrika Catier (van der Laan). Mom passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, at Idlewyld Manor, on October 6th, 2025.

Predeceased by her husband Sybren Catier (2023), of 76 years.

Mom was born in Den Haag, the Netherlands on March 31, 1928. They came to Canada in March 1957, arriving at Pier 21, Halifax, Nova Scotia, with their 2 daughters, son, and having another daughter in 1959. Leaving behind her loving family. Predeceased by her parents, Adriana (Brouwer) and Adrianus van der Laan, her sisters Zus s’Gravemade, Annie Waanders, and her brother Aad van der Laan. She is also leaving behind her loving nieces and nephews in the Netherlands.

Beloved Mother to Hennie (Paul) Brittain, Mary (Brian) Ecker, Andy (Kim) Catier, Marg (Doug) Calic. Loved Opoe to Adriana (Ron) Daniels, Paula Yates, Rick (Heather) Ecker, Rob (Shelley) Ecker, Steve (Kerry) Ecker, Hollie (Tim) Barnes, Jennie (Paul) Martin, Carey (Marvin) Krawczyk, Mike (Kara) Calic. Opoe to 16 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

A special thank you to the nursing staff, personal support workers, nutrition and other support staff at the Spruceview Unit, Idlewyld Manor, for their dedicated care and compassion for our mother. Cremation has taken place.

A private family service will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to your favourite charity.
