Margaret King nee Moyes

Obituary of Margaret Robertson King nee Moyes

With deep love and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Margaret Robertson King, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, on July 12, 2025, in her 95th year.

Born in Clydebank, Scotland, Margaret was a true “Bankie” — tough, witty and warm. She lived through the Clydebank Blitz and the hardships of wartime, but carried those memories not with bitterness, but with stories of resilience, humour, and triumph. Her Scottish spirit shaped not only her own life but also the lives of everyone lucky enough to know her.

In Scotland, Margaret worked at the Singers Sewing Machine factory, at a local florist and at the Co-operative, as a shop manager. In 1961, she moved to Canada, where she continued to work hard, taking cleaning jobs at the YWCA and Boston Wire, as well as hostess at the Hamilton Club. No matter the role, she carried herself with pride, humility, and dedication — though above all, her most important role was always as a mother.

Margaret was the proud mother (and best mother-in-law) of seven children: Margaret (Ken, both deceased), Ron (Michelle), Barbara (Jim, deceased), William (Karen), Patricia (Tim), Leslie (Kerry), and Heather (Wade). She cherished her 11 grandchildren: Michael (Alison), Amber (Derek), Cassandra (Fraser), Andrew (Alexandra), Jeffrey, Kieren (Jessica), Connor (Alana), William, Cameron, Mackenzie, and Callum. Her joy extended to her six great-grandchildren: William, Emma, Adelaide, Brodie, Rhett, and Gabriel — each of whom brought her immense happiness.

Though she made Canada her home, Margaret’s heart never left Scotland. She returned many times over the years to stay connected with her beloved family abroad and to the place that shaped her so deeply. Her Scottish roots were woven into every fibre of her life and the way she raised her family.

She is predeceased by her loving husband, Ted (Hugh), her golden years’ companion, Don Paterson, her parents, and all of her brothers and sisters. She has also said goodbye to many dear friends and neighbours over the years. We take comfort in knowing they will be there to welcome her with open arms. What a joyful reunion it will be, finally together again.

Margaret was adored by all who knew her. She carried photos of her grandchildren in her purse to show off proudly, made fast friends with neighbours of every age, and looked after her senior friends — many of whom were younger than she was. A loving troublemaker in the best possible way, always finding humor to brighten our day. Her advice when life felt heavy: “If you're sad, just sing a wee song and forget your worries.”

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the dedicated staff at Aberdeen Gardens and Alexander Place. Your compassion, kindness and care brought comfort and dignity to Margaret and the family in her final chapter. We are deeply grateful.

In honour of Margaret’s generous heart and joyful spirit, no flowers, please. Instead, do a random act of kindness in her memory. Visit a senior, hold their hand, make them laugh.

Margaret will be laid to rest in a private family gathering, with a celebration of her life to follow near what would have been her 95th birthday in September.

Rest easy, our bonnie lass.
