Lucia (Leokadia / Lucy) McGowan

May 22, 1948 – June 7, 2025

It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the passing of Lucia (Leokadia / Lucy) McGowan on June 7, 2025, in Hamilton, Ontario, at the age of 77.

Lucy was born in Wels, Austria, on May 22, 1948, to Josef and Olena (Helen) Lomzar, both of whom predeceased her. Lucy immigrated to Canada as a young child and made a lasting impact on all who knew her. She was a proud Ukrainian-Canadian and spent her career working in Women and Children’s crisis centres, helping those who were vulnerable.

Lucy was a strong and determined woman who was never afraid to express herself. She found great joy working in her garden and happily shared her vast knowledge on how to grow just about any type of vegetable. Most of all, Lucy loved spending time with her grandchildren, whose presence brought her immense pride and happiness.

Cremation has taken place, and a celebration of Lucy’s life will be held for family and friends at 12:00 p.m. on June 28, 2025, at St. Volodymyr Cultural Centre in Oakville.

Lucy is lovingly remembered by her sons Michael (Nicole) and Kevin (Elizabeth), and cherished by her grandchildren Jason, Hank, Liam, and Elise.

In honour of her heritage and career, donations can be made in her memory to support Ukraine through the Canada-Ukraine Foundation  or to Halton Women’s Place.

She will be deeply missed, always remembered, and forever loved.
